A great read for both skeptics and people of faith
By A Customer
An expanding universe with a singular beginning. Finely-tuned with parameters and constants that must be exactly as they are in order for a life-supporting universe to unfold. Agnostic astronomers saying that the universe is constructed in a way that suggests intelligent design. Fred Heeren explores the major findings of astronomy in this century and this decade. The `infinite steady-state' model is being overwhelmed by new evidence and the accurate predictions of the Big Bang theory. Could it be that the ancient Hebrew prophets had it right all along? Perhaps the cosmos is not really `all there is, was or ever will be'. In a style that is approachable and humorous, Mr. Heeren explores both the science and its implications. This book is a great read for both skeptics and people of faith.

I don't see how anyone can deny what's in the book
By A Customer
I don't see how any educated person can doubt in God. If you believe in the big bang theory, there are just too many things that the natural can not explain. For example, where did the sphere in the big bang theory come from? I have a degree is in Mechanical Engineering, so I have scientific training. Basically, anyone who believes in the big bang theory has to come up with a natural explaination of how something can come from nothing. Of course, this goes against the laws of thermodynamics. So, in coming up with an explaination, you will be going against all of our current laws. There are so many things that this book points out. It's not things that can be refuted, either. Natural scientific facts. I've always said that if you have any scientific training (which you don't have to go to college to get) you have no choice but to believe in God. This book prooves it.

big bang cosmology points to a creator
By Todd T. Stevenson
This book points out the thesis that big bang cosmology is not an enemy to Theists, but rather an empirical tour de force pointing to One. Fred captures the arguements well, and interestingly provides a good historical drama into the evolution of thought on cosmology, which inspired me to do some reading on Einstein's theory of general and special relativity. The author also shows that even Einstein had to concede that his theory pointed to a specific moment of creation, even though he initially didnt follow his logic to his conclusions, commonly known as Einsein's blunder. if you are instersted in the creation debate or just cosmology in general, this is a good start.

Victoriana - Histories, Fictions, Criticism, by Cora Kaplan

A series of astute critical reflections on our enduring fascination with all things Victorian. In this book Cora Kaplan looks at the politics of 'Victoriana' from the 1970s to the present, a politics that emerges from the alternation between nostalgia and critique in fiction, film, biography and literary studies. She asks how Jane Eyre can still evoke tears and rage, as well as inspiring imitation and high art, and why Henry James has become fiction's favourite late Victorian character in the new millennium? 'Victoriana', the book argues, has developed a modern history of its own in which we can trace the shifting social and cultural concerns of the last few decades. Through the constant interrogation of 'history' in such innovative works as John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman, A.S. Byatt's Possession, David Lodge's Nice Work, Peter Ackroyd's Dickens, Jane Campion's The Piano, Colm Toibin's The Master, Sarah Waters's Fingersmith, Alan Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty and Julian Barnes's Arthur and George, 'Victoriana' maps out a very particular postmodern temporality. Features * Uses the Victorian as a touchstone for late 20th and early 21st century writers helping readers to understand the changing meaning of Victorian literature and culture across time. * Explores different genres of Victoriana showing the differences and convergences in the ways in which criticism, biography, fiction and film rewrite the Victorian. * Analyses the pleasures and politics of reading or viewing the recycling of the Victorian past highlighting the relationship between the act of reading and the social and political elements of the texts. * Focuses on work by well-known writers, critics, filmmakers and artists such as A S Byatt, David Lodge, ColmToibin and Sarah Waters in relationship to nineteenth-century authors such as Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens and Henry James.

The Skull Collectors: Race, Science, and America's Unburied Dead, by Ann Fabian

When Philadelphia naturalist Samuel George Morton died in 1851, no one cut off his head, boiled away its flesh, and added his grinning skull to a collection of crania. It would have been strange, but perhaps fitting, had Morton’s skull wound up in a collector’s cabinet, for Morton himself had collected hundreds of skulls over the course of a long career. Friends, diplomats, doctors, soldiers, and fellow naturalists sent him skulls they gathered from battlefields and burial grounds across America and around the world.

With The Skull Collectors, eminent historian Ann Fabian resurrects that popular and scientific movement, telling the strange—and at times gruesome—story of Morton, his contemporaries, and their search for a scientific foundation for racial difference. From cranial measurements and museum shelves to heads on stakes, bloody battlefields, and the “rascally pleasure” of grave robbing, Fabian paints a lively picture of scientific inquiry in service of an agenda of racial superiority, and of a society coming to grips with both the deadly implications of manifest destiny and the mass slaughter of the Civil War. Even as she vividly recreates the past, Fabian also deftly traces the continuing implications of this history, from lingering traces of scientific racism to debates over the return of the remains of Native Americans that are held by museums to this day.

Full of anecdotes, oddities, and insights, The Skull Collectors takes readers on a darkly fascinating trip down a little-visited but surprisingly important byway of American history.

From Publishers Weekly
Rutgers dean of humanities Fabian (The Unvarnished Truth) aims to explore "the tension between skull size as measures of racial difference and as markers of common humanity." Unfortunately, while she touches on this fascinating point on numerous occasions, she never fully examines these issues. She provides information about some of "craniology" 's founders, the oddest stories and contradictions, but leaves the reader to synthesize it all. The first half of the book is largely devoted to the work of Samuel George Morton, a 19th-century naturalist who amassed almost 1,000 skulls and used them to argue that there were five distinct races of humans. While Fabian reports on Morton's passion and methodology, and frequently says his work was the basis for the field of "scientific racism," she doesn't allow readers to get inside Morton's head to understand his perspective. Fabian writes most eloquently about the post–Civil War national dissonance, when the government was working aggressively to bury the war dead, while also promoting the unearthing of Native American graves so skulls could be collected for "scientific" use. However, by presenting more anecdotes than insights, Fabian will leave readers unsatisfied and searching for the big picture. 30 illus.

Review
“Ann Fabian’s latest book is fascinating, astonishingly original, and supplies significant implications for our understanding of life and death in America—among other things.  Brain capacity leads to issues of intelligence, and we all know where that leads. The subject is both curious and compelling—American studies and cultural history at its best.”

(Michael Kammen, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of People of Paradox)

“Ann Fabian's The Skull Collectors has all the elements of great history: genuine surprises, originality, imaginative research, and marvelous storytelling. Even more importantly, it is a brilliant, disturbing story about the fateful convergence of science and racism in the nineteenth century. Samuel George Morton's famous skulls, and the quest by so many others to find, steal, measure, and collect so many varieties of ‘heads’ tells us much about the roots of modern racism as well as about why ‘we’ still struggle to define ourselves as one species. Fabian shows us how the dead have always been our teachers, but what we learn depends on the questions we ask.” (David W. Blight, Yale author of Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory , and A Slave No More: Two Men Who Escaped from Slavery, Including Their Narratives of Emancipation)

“A haunting voyage through the peculiar—and peculiarly American—world of human skull collecting. Ann Fabian's remarkable and moving study illuminates as few other works have the powerful hold that the dead and their remains continue to have upon the living.”

(Karl Jacoby, author of Shadows at Dawn: A Borderlands Massacre and the Violence of History)

“Fabian provides the reader a firm understanding of the history of American physical anthropology during the nineteenth century, serving as an excellent reminder of how far methodologies have come since then. . . . This volume is an excellent contribution to growing literature in the early physical anthropological praxis.”

(American Indian Quarterly)

Sometimes great -- but frustrating
By Magnus Eisengrim
I read this book to learn more about the history of scientific racism, phrenology, and pseudoscience in America. Fabian provides some fascinating glimpses of all of these. At its best, her book places these subjects in a broader context through passages that are filled with insight, and here the writing soars. For example, on phrenology:

"Population doubled in the United States in the first thirty years of the century and increased almost threefold in the next thirty. Practical-minded Americans didn't have to understand the subtleties of cranial location or intricacies in debates about the material basis of ideas to appreciate tools that smoothed their way through relations with strangers -- easy answers to hard questions. Is cruelty part of his character? Deception behind his plans?"

There's a wealth of information in this book about many aspects of 19th century America, even beyond the main topics at hand. It's worth reading for these, and for colorful details about a large cast of real-life characters.

But those expecting any real conclusions about the role and legacy of craniology in American race relations will be disappointed. Fabian's commentary shifts from one skull collector or collection to the next. It explores various connections and influences but never weighs them against other factors to clearly indict or absolve the skull collectors. In place of a methodical evaluation, there is a recurring expression of moral outrage that never leads to any deeper analysis of the harm done by the skull collectors. This makes the book feel incomplete just when it might have become both more moving and more enlightening.

The author wrote in the Foreword to this 1956 book, "My reason for compiling this book has been to try and make it possible for anyone to quickly and easily find any important passage of scripture under any important subject, and yet have the book small enough to be easy for the missionary to carry with him at all times."

The publisher's Introduction to the book notes, "For three years (Keith Marston) worked night and day with very little sleep to earn a living for his family, support his son on a Foreign Mission, and search scriptures and reference material for 'The Missionaries Pal" ... Early morning on July 11, 1956, while en route to a crop dusting assignment... he slumped over the controls of the plane and plunged to Earth. Two days previously he had thumbed happily through 'The Missionaries Pal' and declared to his wife and visiting friends, 'I couldn't add another thing to it. It is finished!'"

The book is arranged into 141 separate topics (see examples below). Here are some quotations from the book:

"APOSTASY, HAD ALREADY STARTED:...Only seven churches still remained that were worthy of mention in the book of Revelations (sic) and the seeds of apostasy were evident even in them." (Pg. 7)(Pg. 7)
"BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD: ... 'For, for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.' (1 Peter 4:6)" (Pg. 19)
BIBLE ERRORS: Acts 9:7 vs. Acts 22:9; Matt 27:5 vs. Acts 1:18. (Pg. 26)
"GOD'S BODY PARTS AND PASSIONS: ... 'For I have seen God face to face.' (Genesis 32:23-30)... 'And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend.' (Exodus 33:11)" (Pg. 64)
"MAN, A GOD IN EMBRYO:... 'Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the Most High.' (Psalms 82:6) 'Is it not written in your law, I said, ye are gods?' (John 10:34-36) Satan tempts Eve: 'Ye shall be as gods.' (Genesis 3:5) The Lord confirms Satan's statement: 'Behold the man is become as one of us.' (Genesis 3:22) (Pg. 102)
"MAN'S PRE-MORTAL EXISTENCE: 'Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.' (Job 1:6)... 'When the morning stars sang together, and all the Sons of God shouted for joy? (Job 38:4-7)... The Lord knew Jeremiah, and he was sanctified and ordained to be a prophet before he was born. (Jeremiah 1:4-5)" (Pg. 129-130)
"SCRIPTURES MISSING: Book of the Covenant (Exodus 24:7) Book of the Wars of the Lord. (Numbers 21:14) Book of Jasher. (Joshua 10:13) Book of the Acts of Solomon. (1 Kings 11:41)" (Pg. 165)

Bias Shows Through
By Richard Frasher
While this book is very good on providing scripture quotations, the commentary is dated and extremely biased. If this book were to be shared with people of non-Mormon faiths, they would become very defensive and rightly so. The author's invective toward the Catholic faith is appaling. Many Mission Presidents do not recommend this book. It could be dangerous in the hands of the untrained.

A Man Without a Country, by Kurt Vonnegut

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“[This] may be as close as Vonnegut ever comes to a memoir.”
–Los Angeles Times

“Like [that of] his literary ancestor Mark Twain, [Kurt Vonnegut’s] crankiness is good-humored and sharp-witted. . . . [Reading A Man Without a Country is] like sitting down on the couch for a long chat with an old friend.”
–The New York Times Book Review

In a volume that is penetrating, introspective, incisive, and laugh-out-loud funny, one of the great men of letters of this age–or any age–holds forth on life, art, sex, politics, and the state of America’s soul. From his coming of age in America, to his formative war experiences, to his life as an artist, this is Vonnegut doing what he does best: Being himself. Whimsically illustrated by the author, A Man Without a Country is intimate, tender, and brimming with the scope of Kurt Vonnegut’s passions.

“For all those who have lived with Vonnegut in their imaginations . . . this is what he is like in person.”
–USA Today

“Filled with [Vonnegut’s] usual contradictory mix of joy and sorrow, hope and despair, humor and gravity.”
–Chicago Tribune

“Fans will linger on every word . . . as once again [Vonnegut] captures the complexity of the human condition with stunning calligraphic simplicity.”
–The Australian

“Thank God, Kurt Vonnegut has broken his promise that he will never write another book. In this wondrous assemblage of mini-memoirs, we discover his family’s legacy and his obstinate, unfashionable humanism.”
–Studs Terkel

From Publishers Weekly
In his first book since 1999, it's just like old times as Vonnegut (now 82) makes with the deeply black humor in this collection of articles written over the last five years, many from the alternative magazine In These Times. But the pessimistic wisecracks may be wearing thin; the conversational tone of the pieces is like Garrison Keillor with a savage undercurrent. Still, the schtick works fine most of the time, underscored by hand-lettered aphorisms between chapters. Some essays suffer from authorial self-indulgence, however, like taking a dull story about mailing a manuscript and stretching it to interminable lengths. Vonnegut reserves special bile for the "psychopathic personalities" (i.e., "smart, personable people who have no consciences") in the Bush administration, which he accuses of invading Iraq so America can score more of the oil to which we have become addicted. People, he says, are just "chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power." Of course, that's exactly the sort of misanthropy hardcore Vonnegut fans will lap up—the online versions of these pieces are already described as the most popular Web pages in the history of In These Times. About the Author
Born in 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana, KURT VONNEGUT was one of the few grandmasters of modern American letters. Called by the New York Times “the counterculture’s novelist,” his works guided a generation through the miasma of war and greed that was life in the U.S. in second half of the 20th century. After a stints as a soldier, anthropology PhD candidate, technical writer for General Electric, and salesman at a Saab dealership, Vonnegut rose to prominence with the publication of Cat’s Cradle in 1963. Several modern classics, including Slaughterhouse-Five, soon followed. Never quite embraced by the stodgier arbiters of literary taste, Vonnegut was nonetheless beloved by millions of readers throughout the world. “Given who and what I am,” he once said, “it has been presumptuous of me to write so well.” Kurt Vonnegut died in New York in 2007.

As a kid I was the youngest member of my family, and the youngest child in any family is always a jokemaker, because a joke is the only way he can enter into an adult conversation. My sister was five years older than I was, my brother was nine years older than I was, and my parents were both talkers. So at the dinner table when I was very young, I was boring to all those other people. They did not want to hear about the dumb childish news of my days. They wanted to talk about really important stuff that happened in high school or maybe in college or at work. So the only way I could get into a conversation was to say something funny. I think I must have done it accidentally at first, just accidentally made a pun that stopped the conversation, something of that sort. And then I found out that a joke was a way to break into an adult conversation.

I grew up at a time when comedy in this country was superb—it was the Great Depression. There were large numbers of absolutely top comedians on radio. And without intending to, I really studied them. I would listen to comedy at least an hour a night all through my youth, and I got very interested in what jokes were and how they worked.

When I’m being funny, I try not to offend. I don’t think much of what I’ve done has been in really ghastly taste. I don’t think I have embarrassed many people, or distressed them. The only shocks I use are an occasional obscene word. Some things aren’t funny. I can’t imagine a humorous book or skit about Auschwitz, for instance. And it’s not possible for me to make a joke about the death of John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King. Otherwise I can’t think of any subject that I would steer away from, that I could do nothing with. Total catastrophes are terribly amusing, as Voltaire demonstrated. You know, the Lisbon earthquake is funny.

I saw the destruction of Dresden. I saw the city before and then came out of an air-raid shelter and saw it afterward, and certainly one response was laughter. God knows, that’s the soul seeking some relief.

Any subject is subject to laughter, and I suppose there was laughter of a very ghastly kind by victims in Auschwitz.

Humor is an almost physiological response to fear. Freud said that humor is a response to frustration—one of several. A dog, he said, when he can’t get out a gate, will scratch and start digging and making meaningless gestures, perhaps growling or whatever, to deal with frustration or surprise or fear.

And a great deal of laughter is induced by fear. I was working on a funny television series years ago. We were trying to put a show together that, as a basic principle, mentioned death in every episode and that this ingredient would make any laughter deeper without the audience’s realizing how we were inducing belly laughs.

There is a superficial sort of laughter. Bob Hope, for example, was not really a humorist. He was a comedian with very thin stuff, never mentioning anything troubling. I used to laugh my head off at Laurel and Hardy. There is terrible tragedy there somehow. These men are too sweet to survive in this world and are in terrible danger all the time. They could be so easily killed.

Even the simplest jokes are based on tiny twinges of fear, such as the question, “What is the white stuff in bird poop?” The auditor, as though called upon to recite in school, is momentarily afraid of saying something stupid. When the auditor hears the answer, which is, “That’s bird poop, too,” he or she dispels the automatic fear with laughter. He or she has not been tested after all.

“Why do firemen wear red suspenders?” And “Why did they bury George Washington on the side of a hill?” And on and on.

True enough, there are such things as laughless jokes, what Freud called gallows humor. There are real-life situations so hopeless that no relief is imaginable.

While we were being bombed in Dresden, sitting in a cellar with our arms over our heads in case the ceiling fell, one soldier said as though he were a duchess in a mansion on a cold and rainy night, “I wonder what the poor people are doing tonight.” Nobody laughed, but we were still all glad he said it. At least we were still alive! He proved it.

A Quick Read Which Will be Sure To Get You Thinking!
By Brandon Hoffman
A Man Without A Country is a surefire hit for any Vonnegut fan. The book is a collection of ideas and short writings from the mind of 82 year old Kurt Vonnegut. The writings are reminiscent of a modern day blogger which is ironic considering Vonnegut's dislike of technological advance. I feel that his writings in this semi-memoire were quite amusing, well organized and inciteful. His feelings on war and the current state of this country are a little off the beaten path but they open your eyes to another way of thinking. I was also very impressed by his comparison of gasoline/petrolium to drug addiction. Overall this is a great book and a very quick read. Vonnegut will surely go down in history as one of the greatest writers of all time.

This book is about how ministers have fallen away from their calling and lost the anointing that God placed on them.

The author gives principles that are essential to spirititual survival. It's one thing to start; its another to finish. God wants us to finish our course.

Jesus left us an example to follow in His steps. Keys to longevity and contined blessing in the christian life is to remain in the place of absolute and total dependency upon God. In our weakness, God will make us strong.

Amazing
By Ben
Have you ever read a book, and it was so good that you didn't want to tell people about it? That is what this book means to me. I have been a christian for several years, but in two days of reading this book, my prayer life was transformed and my relationship with God has gone to new depths. Highly recommended!

Useful, practical, respectful
By Darya Elle
This is an immensely useful, practical guide. The authors treat both parents and "little kids" with the respect they deserve. If you can get your toddlers to listen, maybe they'll still be listening when they're a not-such-little kids--and maybe even when they're teens.
This book will be useful to parents of all kinds of kids, including those with special needs.

Must read parenting book
By Daisy Day
This is a must read parenting book for ages 2-7. Especially great for 3.5 year olds ;)
Not many parenting books cover so many topics while giving concrete examples, respectful tools/tips/tricks to manage emotions, resolve conflicts and engage cooperation. Using the info from this book will improve your relationship to your child, make you feel more successful as a parent, and make parenting more fun! All positives. It's also a great book for parents looking for alternatives to punishment. Plus it's a fun, easy read!

So useful and Appropriate for Language Challenged 4YO.
By Meno
Just what we needed for a 4YO with significant language delays. I'm only part way through the chapter on Special Needs kids and it's changing so much of how we were handling things. I like that it is full of anecdotal information from real parents. We have been making so many mistakes and this book is a real eyeopener.
