I really like the writing style

For a textbook, there is a bit of humor. Each chapter stands on its own so important information is defined again in other chapters as it relates to the new chapter. Its a great reference if you need to write a research paper. Also, it has examples of APA pages/sections along with the information that should be included in each section.

Brian Romanchuk founded the website BondEconomics.com in 2013. It is a website dedicated to providing analytical tools for the understanding of the bond markets and monetary economics. He previously was a senior fixed income analyst at la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. He held a few positions, including being the head of quantitative analysis for fixed income. He worked there from 2006-2013. Previously, he worked as a quantitative analyst at BCA Research, a Montréal-based economic-financial research consultancy, from 1998-2005. During that period, he developed a number of proprietary models for fixed income analysis, as well as covering the economies of a few developed countries. Brian received a Ph.D. in Control Systems Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and held post-doctoral positions there and at McGill University. His undergraduate degree was in electrical engineering, from McGill. He is a CFA charter holder. Brian currently lives in the greater Montréal area.

I highly recommend 'Understanding Government Finance' by Brian Romanchuk

Whether you are a devout follower of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), or have never heard of it, I highly recommend 'Understanding Government Finance' by Brian Romanchuk, who is a Quebec-based fixed income quant analyst and publishes the website Bond Economics. Mr. Romanchuk’s expertise on the subject matter of government finance is evident, he has a B.Eng. in electrical engineering from McGill University, a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in control systems engineering, and is a CFA Charterholder. In May 2015, Brian Romanchuk was named by the Fixed Income Database newsletter as one of the ‘Top 10 Fixed Income Experts Worth Following’.

As per Mr. Romanchuk, the study of economic models, just like the study of mathematical models, includes understanding the rules, called constraints, that govern the behavior of variables in any highly complex system. These constraints affect the interrelationships of variables with all other entities within an economy, and understanding of these constraints (or the lack of constraints like a currency peg / gold fix) helps determine economic outcomes.

Mr. Romanchuk correctly takes aim at the pre-financial-crisis US money market system, saying that its "negligible capital requirements exacerbated the crisis", and generally "dragged US banks into the mess". This is true. In 'Stress Test', written by former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, US money markets were part of the tri-party repo market which seized when Lehman went bankrupt on September 15, 2008, magnifying the crisis. As a result of this consequential interconnection and heavy reliance on the repo market for intra-day credit, the US Federal Reserve Bank’s macro-prudential policy today is to reduce the role of US money markets, broker-dealers, and clearing banks in the tri-party repo market.

In another clever observation, Mr. Romanchuk writes that US Treasury debt management officials have “painted themselves into an elaborate corner” by continuing to stick to the narrative that Treasury debt issuance is still needed to finance federal deficit spending, and that pure market forces alone determine the interest rates set at Treasury bond auctions ('monetizing debts' of gold-backed dollars was replaced by 'monetizing deficits' in fiat dollars, and the federal gov't manipulates interest rates to levels that it sees fit).

In 'Understanding Government Finance', Mr. Romanchuk wastes no time pointing out many of the common misconceptions by citizens regarding central government financing and the nonsensical tools used worldwide by monetary policymakers such as “counter-productive” US reserve requirements, “crazy” European negative interest rates, “meaningless” central government budget constraints, and “silly” Japanese quantitative easing. QE was first deployed in Japan in the 1990s and now practiced globally because central bankers "yearn to remain relevant after lowering policy rates to zero”, Mr. Romanchuk quips in yet another hits-it-on-the-head passage.

Good, but there's better ways...

I'll start with saying that I got a 780 on the Biology SAT test. I purchased both this book and the barron's book. I would recommend buying both if you wish to score in the 700's, especially in the high 700's. The Barron's book has a better sense of the test, and the PR book has a bit more information, with more extraneous information. Ultimately the test will differ from any books. However the Princeton will prepare you very well. Also, most of the people in my class that scored in the 700's used this book.

In my case in one month and a half of studying, with both books i could produce very good results. This book will help you to learn the format of the test and how to take advantage of it, as well as reinforcing your knowledge of the material as well. You will not regret buying this book

It didn't help much once I took that SAT Bio ...

It didn't help much once I took that SAT Bio on May 2. Had to rely on my AP knowledge to get me through the test. Had too much extraneous info that was not even mentioned. Of the entire book, only 1/4 of it kinda helped.

Necessity for Preparing

This book and Barron's SAT Biology together are what you need to do well on the SAT Biology E (I took the E one, not sure about M). I first read through the content in Barron's, then I used this book to reinforce all the concepts. I really love this book's practice tests, drills, and clear + easy to comprehend formatting, which, unfortunately, Barron's is lacking. However, the sacrifice is a little less information ... so that's why you should use Barron's with it. That's what I did, (along with studying consistently for my high school biology class and watching a crash course on Youtube) and it really helped me achieve a high score! Thanks, Princeton Review!

Gr 2–5—Following in the footsteps of his If America Were a Village (2009) and If the World Were a Village (2011, both Kids Can), Smith again scales down large concepts and numbers for young readers with a focus on worldly concepts. Topics ranging from our galaxy, solar system, world history, inventions, world population, and energy and food production are related to familiar everyday objects, so children can easily grasp the relationship between these big ideas. For instance: if all of Earth's water was represented by 100 drinking glasses, 97 glasses would be filled with salt water, while only three would be filled with fresh water. Only one of the three is accessible, as the remaining two would be found in glaciers, frozen in the atmosphere, or deep underground. Adams's beautiful illustrations, reminiscent of folk art, vividly portray the concepts but may occasionally lead to some confusion. When presenting world life expectancy as footprints in the sand, the illustration makes it seem as though North Americans live the longest at 78 years (with 78 footprints), but only when reading the side panel is it stated that residents of some countries would have 83 footprints. Furthermore, Smith's time lines are brief and may overlook events some find most relevant (for instance, he doesn't include the automobile on the time line of Inventions of the Last 1000 Years). An author's note provides suggestions for additional scale activities, and a list of useful books and websites can be found as well. Overall, the text serves as an excellent discussion starter and bridge to comprehending big concepts. Another classic from David Smith

Another classic book for kids of all ages from David Smith! When I was an elementary school teacher, I used "If the World Were a Village" and "If America Were a Village" to supplement my social studies and math lessons throughout the year. Now that I'm an at-home parent, I've read "IF" aloud at home and loaned it to my child's 5th grade teacher when her class was studying planets. My 2nd grader was dumbfounded by the idea of how little fresh water there is in the world, and he was able to relate it to a class discussion at school about water conservation. The Water and Energy pages made me think about my own consumption, as we're experiencing a historic drought here in the Southwest.

Great book for proportional thinking about large numbers!

This book inspired us to begin looking at other large things and how we could represent them pictorially! Great for anyone looking to talk about large numbers (or tiny ones) in a new way. Great for teachers who are exploring ratios with their students. Challenge them to make their own poster about something with huge numbers!
