My View of This Book

I read Helter Skelter in its first edition publishing in the 70's. In the late 70's I also obtained and read Susan's book "Child of Satan, Child of God". I recommend the book if only to read thoughts from one of Manson's most notorious associates and one of the principle participants in the Tate murders.

But what the book represents is less of insight into the mind of a killer and more of an effort to demonstrate to the world that Susan Atkins had now (at the time she wrote this) separated herself from Manson's lethal ideology and recognized that she had made an error "allowing" herself to be controlled by Manson.

What is disappointing though, is that Atkins never (in my feeling) takes full responsibility for her actions during the deadly Manson Family era. I finished the book feeling her words were designed to impress the reader that her participation in the killings were more the direct result of Manson's influence over her, and less of the reality she was a willing participant.

In that sense it appeared she was trying to lay the early ground work for what would become numerous parole board appeals. From early on in their incarcerations, most Manson Family members, now separated from the notorious Charlie and his influence and surrounded by institutional reality, suddenly wanted the world to believe they had changed and deserved a "second chance" with release from prison. This book looks to be written for that specific goal in mind.

The Manson murders continue to fascinate even after all these years. Though they are easily forgotten now after so many decades have faded the memories, they still represent an astounding aberration of human nature in an era in which society was seeming to transform itself from relative orderliness to a complex mix of youthful rebellion, rejection of authority and the overt influence of drugs, "free love" and competing views on the role and motives of government in our lives.

scary, very scary....

I sincerely hope Miss Atkins is the changed person she claims to be in this book, but frankly, I find it almost impossible to believe anything she says. She has told so many lies over the years about the Tate-LaBianca case, I think it's quite possible that even she doesn't know the truth anymore.
Like the rest of the convicted killers involved in the Tate-LaBianca murders, she cops out by saying she had been brainwashed by Manson and had little control over her actions. I believe Manson knew who had the ability to kill and who didn't, and chose the people who went out to kill seven innocent people very carefully. Although Manson had the ability to capitalize on their weaknesses, the end result was these heartless people CHOSE to do his bidding. They could have gone back and told Charlie no one was home or simply refused his request in the first place.
I simply can't conjure up any sympathy for anyone who is capable of comitting such a heartless act and the thought of someone like that being free to walk among us again is terrifying. Atkins claims she has found god and tells us he has forgiven her. I believe god can forgive anyone for anything if that person is truly remorseful for his or her sins, and if he has forgiven her, then her afterlife is assured. However, she is being held in prison because she comitted a crime against society, and society says she will rot in a jail cell for her unspeakable crimes. It's incredibly obscene for someone like Miss Atkins to place such a high value on her own life, when she had no hesitation whatsoever about taking the life of an eight and half month pregnant woman who pleaded in vain for her life and that of her unborn child.
Seven innocent people are in their graves and they will never get a second chance. The killers deserve the same fate.

Interesting view from Sexy Sadie

I am enthralled with the Mason Family, particularly the minds of the women so I thought this would be a good book to gain insight into the mind of "Sexie Sadie", Susan Atkins. It was an easy read, I zipped right through it in a few days. Basically, it starts with a tiny bit of information on Susan's childhood and journey to San Francisco where she met Charlie. From there, it brushes gently over the details and events that occurred with the Tate/LaBianca murders. The last portion of the book, the majority, is her time in prison and her rebirth through Christianity. The primary focus being her rebirth. She definitely becomes intensely Christian, going into her new baptism, constant quotations from the bible and speaking in tongues. I bought it with hopes that I'd gain insight into her mind and the reasoning for the gruesome acts she committed but none of that was touched on, it is simply a book explaining her acceptance of Jesus Christ as her savior, becoming a child of God. I think that's fine, whatever made her happy, whatever gave her true peace within her tortured soul. If you're interested in reading about each Manson Family member and their take on their experience, then do read this book. I'm glad I did. If you want a detailed account of the crimes, investigation, and trial, read Bugliosi's book. But what the heck, read both, it's an easy read.

About the Author

Kenneth M. Adams, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist and the clinical director of Kenneth M. Adams and Associates in suburban Detroit, Michigan. In addition to maintaining an active clinical practice, Dr. Adams is a national lecturer, workshop leader, and consultant in the areas of childhood abuse, dysfunctional family systems, and sex addiction. He is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), a CSAT supervisor, and a CSAT training facilitator as well as an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) practitioner. A member of the American Psychological Association, Michigan Psychological Association, Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH), and International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP), Dr. Adams is also an advisory board member to SASH and IITAP, and an editorial board member of Sexual Addiction & Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention.

Dr. Adams, along with coauthor Dan Robinson, received the 2001 Reader's Choice Award for "Shame Reduction, Affect Regulation and Sexual Boundary Development: Essential Building Blocks in Sex Addiction Treatment," the article voted by subscribers of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention as the Article of the Year. Introduction

When I began writing Silently Seduced twenty years ago, I could not have imagined its longevity and impact. Since then, hundreds of covert incest survivors have discussed the book with me in therapy sessions and have mentioned it in lectures. They most frequently report two main reactions to the book: one, that it clarifies a troublesome parent-child relationship history that was perplexing and previously beyond the reader's understanding; and two, that the succinct and clear manner in which it is written allows readers to be undistracted by repetition or material that is spurious to the topic. As such, Silently Seduced has not only been informative to its readers, but transformative as well. For many, it opened an emotional, experiential moment that ignited the search for more clarity and healing.

Over the years, I have received many important and thoughtful questions that the original text did not adequately answer. For example, some readers are still seeking clarity on why I consider it incestuous when a parent turns a child into a surrogate husband or wife but does not touch them sexually. Others have sought more information on how best to manage their adult relationship with their parent. They want to neither continue with the same level of inappropriate closeness nor completely 'divorce' their parent.

Other questions have been about how to deal with siblings, how to date, and how to handle the tension between the intrusive parent and the romantic partner. Readers have wanted more perspective on emotional issues, such as how to break free from the suffocating guilt or fear of engulfment that seems to plague covert incest survivors so often. A desire for a healthy relationship and a way to finally feel contented in love is the source of many questions. Wanting to understand why their sexuality seems so burdened, even though there was no sexual touch, creates a frequent source of confusion for survivors.

I've also been asked about certain populations or special circumstances. For example, are there different issues for a gay man who is involved as a surrogate husband to his mother than for a straight man? What about when a daughter plays the role of a surrogate partner to her mother as opposed to her father? Are there implications for single-parent households or for adults who choose to have and raise a child as a single parent? What are the specific problems and concerns for the partners or spouses of covert incest survivors? How should they best respond to the difficulties in their relationships caused by the covert incest of their partners?

Although many survivors of covert incest are able to relate to the stories of overt incest survivors, most struggle to feel validated because they have not been physically violated. Covert incest survivors are still suffering in silence. In fact, most are not aware that their relationships with their parents were incestuous. I've written this book to give such survivors a framework to understand what happened to them, how their lives continue to be affected, and how to begin the process of recovery.

What follows in this new edition is an update to the original text and a new chapter that addresses the questions that have emerged over the last twenty years. The new chapter, Frequently Asked Questions, is a dialogue between you, the reader, and me, as if we were sitting down in a therapy session or I was responding during a lecture. In addition, new material has emerged in the field over the years that supports my observations. The bibliography has been updated to reflect those sources.

In the first part of the book, I use the word 'victim' to describe the person still experiencing the effects of covert incest. These early chapters describe the victimization process and its consequences. In the last chapters, I discuss change and recovery. I use the word 'survivor' instead of 'victim' at that point to help underscore the important transformation from being a victim to reclaiming life. Also, to help the stories flow without the encumbering use of he/she or him/her, I use personal pronouns interchangeably.

The stories presented in the book are composites designed to illustrate the traits of covert incest survivors. Your actual experience may vary. No one story represents any one person's particular life. To protect their right to privacy, I have purposely avoided using the stories of my clients. However, their sharing certainly has influenced my thinking. To that extent, there may be some overlap between what I have heard in my practice and what I have included in these pages. I am grateful to my clients for the sharing of their lives and the trust they have given me in the process. I respect their courage.

As I did in the original book, I strive to be clear and to the point, with as little psychological jargon as possible, in hopes that the new edition becomes another transformative step in your journey from pain and struggle to healing and freedom.

Enlightening

"Silently Seduced" is revealing detailed information on the dynamics of abnormal relationships. Covertly incestuous and enmeshed relationships are extremely damaging to everyone involved. A whole family is often affected by just one persons insecurity and inability to come to grips with their abnormal behaviors and patterns of living. Silently Seduced addresses all the ins and outs of certain characteristics and the motivations that cause enmeshed relationships to develop. It is a shame that this type of dysfunction exists and those who participate in it are so very convincing and manage to control everyone around them in order to be in charge. Making a child their partner creates a whole atmosphere of chaotic behaviors that are not normal. When a child feels they have to be the interveining influence between two adults and try to fix everything it puts them in an unjust and unreal position, one that is impossible. When an adult emotionally and or physically disconnects from their spouse because their is no love or chemistry and becomes solely involved with a child for some sad sense of self fulfillment it creates a totally out of control family atmosphere, the chosen child becomes the target.

Silently Seduced is a must read for anyone who knows of these particular family dynamics and wants to understand what causes this type of dysfunction. "Covert incest occurs when a child becomes the object of a parent's affection, love, passion and preoccupation. The parent, motivated by loneliness and emptiness created by a chronically troubled marriage or relationship, makes the child a surrogate partner. The boundary between caring love and incestuous love is crossed when the relationship with the child exists to meet the needs of the parent rather than those of a child. As the deterioration in the marriage progresses, the dependency on the child grows, and the opposite-sex parent's response to the child becomes increasingly characterized by desperation, jealousy, and a disregard for personal boundaries. The child becomes an object to be manipulated and used so the parent can avoid the pain and reality of a troubled marriage.

In a covertly incestuous relationship, the parent complains to the child about the difficulties in the marriage. The child becomes the parent's confidante.

The family system works to seek balance and tries to correct itself, even in adulthood. As long as the abuse or neglect experienced in childhood remains buried within, we re-create our family in adult relationships. This is an effort to work out and resolve the childhood pain. yes, the family system continues to affect one's life when one is no longer living at home and has dismissed childhood as gone and best forgotten".

"Silently Seduced" shares on how those who are controlling personalities operate and how they involve those who are innocent. Many incested/enmeshed individuals has a sense of shame causing them to compensate for having not felt a sense of love. They attempt to put their life in "perfect" order to compensate for the chaos in the relationships of her heart. Unable to feel the warmth of love, they desperately needs to control their world and is not able to tolerate any deviation to their plans and world. Doing things right is the only reward they can attain as they live very carefully in fear that a small slip up could cause them to lose their fragile hold on things. They clutch and hold on tightly those who they wish to control and manipulate. Believing within they are no real self, that they are not loved, or respected, or needed so they must make themselves lovable, appear respectable, and create the illusion of being indispensable to others. They live by their false self, often bouncing between over and under inflated presentations of themselves. They strive to present a perfect image and is not genuine.

I highly recommend this book.

The best on the topic for sources of repetitive pain in relationships. Authoritative, wise, and complete.

This book does the great service of accessibly articulating the emotional landscape of adults who were leaned on too much as children by their parents. The author describes the workings of unresolved feelings in ways that honor every adult child and parent who has lived this. Powerful and concise, and worth reading with a highlighter in hand. The scope of the book is thorough enough to provide hope and good orderly direction. The only book on this topic that gently, respectfully, but directly addresses this type of healing without leaving anything or anyone out.

Spot on Book

As someone that has gone thru Covert Incest, this book is the hardest book to ever read in my life. It was given to me many years ago by a friend when they said it fit me to a "T." They were so right, I am just now able to open up and go past Chapter one. If you have had or have a parent that treats you more like a spouse rather than a child, I urge you to read this book.

You can read this whole book in about an hour. This young lady Is beautiful and alluring. I just wish there were more facts about her, a lot of writings about Maria is speculation, some good and some not so good. You be the judge. Don't believe all you read but yet believe all you read that is good.

The first half is great, containing some good historical facts pertaining to Maria Orsic and the Vril symbol. The second half is hit or miss as I am not sure how much I believe in the medium of Joel Tucker, who is introduced as a medium in contact with the late Maria Orsic.

John H. Moore is Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His research has included plasma chemistry, high-energy electron scattering, and the design and fabrication of instruments for use in the laboratory and on spacecraft.

Christopher C. Davis is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Currently his research deals with free space optical and directional RF communication systems, plasmonics, near-field scanning optical microscopy, chemical and biological sensors, interferometry, optical systems, bioelectromagnetics, and RF dosimetry.

Michael A. Coplan is Professor and Director of the Chemical Physics Program at the University of Maryland. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has research programs in space science, electron scattering, and neutron detection.

Sandra C. Greer is Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Maryland. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and recipient of the American Chemical Society Francis P. Garvan-John M. Olin Medal. Her research deals with experimental thermodynamics and statistical mechanics of fluids and fluid mixtures, living polymers, biopolymers, and polymer solutions.

This book is an invaluable resource for any experimentalist. It's a startingly dense yet readable distillation of the information you really need to have at your fingertips if you're going to make an experiment work. The emphasis is on breadth and need-to-know rather than depth; this book will not replace (nor does it pretend to replace) specialized books on the sub-topics, but for, say, an optics person wanting to know what to say to a machinist to get a job done quickly, efficiently, with appropriate materials and tolerances, and most of all, to have it all work at the end without breaking the budget . . . this is your book. Covers mechanical design, materials, optics (photon and electron varieties), electronics, and temperature control.

I always found Jurisprudence very boring which made it difficult for me to read the whole chapters in those thick Juris books.
This book is a very good start. It highlights the key facts and elaborates them in a very simple and easy tone which makes it easy to understand the topic.
All the essays I wrote in my exam were partly taken from this book.

About the Author
Clyde P. Stickney is the Signal Companies' Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College. He received his DBA from Florida State University and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Tuck School in 1977. He has also taught at business schools in Japan, Australia, Finland, and Germany. Prof. Stickney has authored and coauthored books on financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis.

Roman L. Weil, Ph.D., CPA, is the V. Duane Rath Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Chicago and has within recent years been Visiting Professor at the Haas School of the University of California, Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Harvard Law School; Princeton University; and New York University. He has designed and implemented continuing education programs for partners at two of the large accounting firms and for employees at several operating corporations. Dr. Weil has co-authored dozens of books. His lay articles have appeared in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in academic and professional journals, most recently on financial literacy for corporate governance and on the exposure of wine snobbery.
