About the Author
Mark A. Bedau is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Reed College, Oregon and a regular Visiting Professor at the European School of Molecular Medicine, in Milan, Italy. He is an internationally recognized leader in the philosophical and scientific study of living systems and has published and lectured extensively on issues concerning emergence, evolution, life, mind, and the social and ethical implications of creating life from nonliving materials.

Carol E. Cleland is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado (Boulder). She is a central figure in the emerging science of astrobiology and has published in major science as well as philosophy journals. Her research focuses on issues in scientific methodology, historical science (especially earth and planetary science), biology (especially microbiology, origins of life, the nature of life, and astrobiology), and the theory of computation.

A collection of writings on the philosophy of biology

This book is a real gem. A number of different viewpoints on the origin and essence of life are presented, all of which are thought-provoking and generally accessible. The hardest read was the extract from Kant's "Critique of the teleological power of judgement" but I can see the reasons for including this piece amongst the others. The origins and definition of life are two questions that I have been reading around for a while, this book is definitely one of the highlights of my collection. I would see this book sitting on the bookshelf of beginners and scholars alike.

II. The Origin and extent of Natural Life

III. Artificial Life and Synthetic Biology

IV. Defining and Explaining Life

this book will challenge and broaden your perceptions on the nature of life. You won't find many arguments for vitalism in here, the vast majority of the essays assume that life is a material phenomenon, accessible to scientific investigation, but the complexities possible within this stricture are fully explored. Many of the big names from the discipline of biology have contributed, and each section begins with a thoughtful introduction. The references and bibliography are impeccable.

When the plot of your first novel partially hinges on anarchist overthrows funded by soap sales, and the narrative hook of your second work is the black box recorder of a jet moments away from slamming into the Australian outback, it stands to reason that your audience is going to be ready for anything. Which, to an author like Chuck Palahniuk, must sound like a challenge. Palahniuk's third identity crisis (that's "novel" to you), Invisible Monsters, more than ably responds to this call to arms. Set once again in an all-too-familiar modern wasteland where social disease and self-hatred can do more damage than any potboiler-fiction bad guy, the tale focuses particularly on a group of drag queens and fashion models trekking cross-country to find themselves, looking everywhere from the bottom of a vial of Demerol to the end of a shotgun barrel. It's a sort of Drugstore Cowboy-meets-Yentl affair, or a Hope-Crosby road movie with a skin graft and hormone-pill obsession, if you know what I mean.

Um, yeah. Anyway, the Hollywood vibe doesn't stop these comparisons. As with Fight Club and Survivor, the book is invested with a cinematic sweep, from the opening set piece, which takes off like a house afire (literally), to a host of filmic tics sprayed throughout the text: "Flash," "Jump back," "Jump way ahead," "Flash," "Flash," "Flash." You get the idea. It's as if Palahniuk didn't write the thing but yanked it directly out of the Cineplex of his mind's eye. Does it succeed? Mostly. Still working on measuring out the proper dosages of his many writerly talents (equal parts potent imagery, nihilistic coolspeak, and doped-out craziness), Palahniuk every now and then loosens his grip on the story line, which at points becomes as hard to decipher as your local pill addict's medicine cabinet. However Invisible Monsters works best on a roller-coaster level. You don't stop and count each slot on the track as you're going down the big hill. You throw up your hands and yell, "Whee!" --Bob Michaels

Palahniuk's grotesque romp aims to skewer the ruthless superficiality of the fashion world and winds up with a tale as savagely glib as what it derides. Narrator Shannon McFarland, once a gorgeous fashion model, has been hideously disfigured in a mysterious drive-by shooting. Her jaw has been shot off, leaving her not only bereft of a career and boyfriend, but suddenly invisible to the world. Along comes no-nonsense, pill-popping diva Brandy Alexander, a resplendent, sassy, transgendered chick, who has modeled her body rearrangement--the breast implants, the hair, the figure--on what Shannon used to look like. Brandy suggests veils, high camp and no self-pity. Shannon wants revenge[...] Adding to the plot's contrivances are the relentless flashbacks, heralded at the beginning of almost every paragraph with "Jump back to..." and the author's pretentious device of using a fashion photographer's commands ("Flash. Give me adoration. Flash. Give me a break") to signpost the narrator's epiphanies. Palahniuk writes like he's overdosed on Details magazine. Though the absurd surprise ending may incite groans of disbelief, this book does have fun moments when campy banter tops the heroine's flat, whiny bathos. (Sept.) This is a wild ride of a novel. The narrator is an unnamed fashion model who's had her lower jaw shot off in an ambush. In the hospital, she meets her new mentor, the Princess Brandy Alexander, who is in the middle of a year-long gender reassignment process. Together, they launch a picaresque voyage of revenge on the narrator's ex-best friend, model Evie, and ex-boyfriend, vice cop Manus, who were having an affair before the shooting. Along the way they pick up Sean, whom they are inexplicably feeding gender-altering pharmaceuticals without his knowledge. The novel opens with its climax, then jumps around the narrator's life, introducing her crazy parents, her ostensibly dead brother, and the nun-nurse who is trying to fix her up with other patients who have suffered disfiguring accidents. No one is who he or she seems to be, and the challenge is to figure out who is morphing into whom. By the end, most readers will be both exhausted and exhilarated. George Needham

Very dated

I can tell it's the type of book I would like and think edgy when I was 18 to 25. Now the angst and disillusionment this book is steeped in holds very little for me. I thought the twists were eye roll moments for me. Chuck's cleverness and prose is really good. He has a symmetrical and poetic way of writing; however, the plot, content and characters were horrible. For me this book is a waste of time. I really enjoyed Fight Club and Survivor, and as I started picking up reading again I thought I would enjoy another of Chuck's books and at least this one wasn't for me. But to be honest, this dark "edgy" type of writing probably isn't for me anymore.

Nail-biting, jaw-dropping ride from beginning to end...

I love this book. It is a nail-biting, jaw-dropping ride from beginning to end. The characters can be loved and hated all within the span of a few pages. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Definitely a book I will read again and again, but probably not until I'm ready for another roller coaster ride.

I would guess that a movie version of this book would easily have an R rating. Just a heads up. Chuck is brilliant, but he is also blunt and not afraid to make his characters bold, brazen, and proud to be that way.

This is one of my favorite Chuck Palahniuk books. If you're a fan of his writing, I would definitely recommend you get this book ASAP. It's dark, a little twisted and all around great. This is the type of book that you want to bring every where you go so that you can read more any chance you get, even if it is just another page.

Zentangle Mastery Series a MUST have!

Zentangle Mastery Series is the book I decided to start with to learn how to Zentangle. This book is a MUST have for anyone who wants to learn how to do this artform.

After being diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago, my world turned upside down. I felt symptoms of depression, anxiety, and all things that could be thought of. I could not sleep, could not stay awake when I needed to, I could not focus or have any peace.

Looking through books on doodling, this book came up as a suggestion. I bought the book, bought my supplies and wanted to learn more! I had no idea where to start though. I loved all the drawings I had seen, but had no idea where to begin.

This book is just what I needed. With examples, discussions, and suggestions, I felt so much more comfortable as I decided to try my first attempt. After reading this book, NOW I had an idea where to begin. I finally had something that helped me focus, helped me zone into to what I needed to start and to grow.

With this book, I have finally helped myself a lot dealing with appointments, waiting in doctors offices, just something I needed to calm my mind.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn how to draw a Zentangle. The guidance it gives you will take you on a journey of inner peace. I am not an artist, I am not an illustrator, I do not even claim to be able to draw, but it does not matter. I can make dots, I can connect the dots, I can draw lines, circles and squares. And this book has given me the know-how to understand a lot more of what I am doing. It helps me break patterns down into simple strokes anyone can do. And the peace it gives my mind is invaluable.

I really look forward to more books from Olivia Summers. Her easy to read style of writing, showing examples, and more are what attract me to this book and her writing. If I could give more than 5 stars I sure would!

Fast Forward for Zentangle Beginners

This book was a great help for me as a beginning Zentangler. The step by step drawings were particularly helpful. The author is very gentle in her approach and I need that, as I'm just getting started, because I've never drawn anything before.

Not worth ten cents never mind four dollars.

There is not an original idea anywhere in the book. The majority of the information given can be had for free on zentangle.com. That's where all the patterns came from as far as I can determine. Bottom line on this, the author has compiled a collection of someone else's work and called it her own, without even having the grace to pay her dues and become a CZT (certified zentangle teacher). Save up..invest your money in one of Sandy Steen Bartholemew's books or one by Marie Browning, Suzanne McNeill or Chris Letourneau. They at least are fun to read and will give you much more inspiration than this total rehash of basic Zentangle patterns. Needless to say I will not be purchasing the other two books in this series.

This book examines the effects of the moral rhetoric of the market concept of justice on our understanding of justice. This change has come at the expense of diminishing the role of distributive justice, or justice in what the community owes its members. This diminishment rules out discussion in the public sphere of any questions about our obligations to each other outside the market, relegating such questions instead to the purview of social decorum; so at the very historical moment in which equality of persons becomes the foundational condition for political liberty, the implications of that equality for how we should treat each other cease to be admissible as live political issues – that is, discussable as justice.

This shift in elevating commutative justice is traced through the moral rhetoric of praise and blame in the political economy of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman. Their theories of the market serve to implicitly position social and market decorum alongside an explicit commutative framework as the condition for a naturally self-regulating market. Their appeal to decorum is presented as a naturally occurring source of social stability. The book examines how these fundamental features of the economic argument represented by Smith and Friedman appear influentially in moral and political philosophy, among critics as well as supporters of the market system. The consistent problem is the persistent neglect of the genesis of individual identity’s constitution in community, resulting in an overvaluation of individualism and an under-acknowledgement of the significance of belonging. Resolving this problem must necessarily focus on making relational complaints about justice part of public discussion again.

This book, like the others in the Accidental Administrator series, is based on the student workbooks I wrote for my IT training workshops.  I specialize in accelerated training and this book reflects that approach to learning:  lots of material, delivered in a short amount of time.  I wrote it with the idea of giving you an abundance of hands-on exercises and only the essential bits of theory and background information.  I tried to include many tips and shortcuts that I've learned and used in managing Cisco ASA Security Appliances.  This book IS designed to help you get a Cisco ASA up and running quickly.  It is NOT designed to provide a lot of theory or background information on how the device operates.  It was a lot of fun for me to write (especially going back through and testing the exercises) and I hope you enjoy it, too.

This is a great book for anybody who wants some practical knowledge with ...

This is a great book for anybody who wants some practical knowledge with a proper stateful packet inspection firewall. By the time you are done with this book, you will posses some very useful skills for setting up a Cicso ASA. There is certainly no shortage of documentation on the Cisco website, but unfortunately it can be tough to find. This book will provide a good start point for somebody new to firewalls, somebody who is not a full time fw admin, or for somebody coming from Checkpoint, Fortinet, etc. Here's a good use case... do you want to implement the firewall in transparent mode? Go search around the net and Cisco website for a bit and see how you do. In this book the reason why you would want to do this and the procedure for doing it is clearly stated.

Great book !!

Great book !! I am a CCNP R&S, but a newbie on ASA devices. This book has helped me a lot for grasping a quick knowledge of Cisco ASA devices. Clearly and thoroughly explained, useful examples, succinct concepts, ... , this book covers all I needed for introducing myself in the world of Cisco ASA devices.

If I may do just a couple of suggestion for future editions:

First, I don't see the point of sometimes repeating the commands twice, first within the text, and secondly within a screenshot. For instance, at page 42 (Configure Port Address Translation), the set of four commands are repeated twice.

Second, why not quote the VIRL platform, instead of always referring to real equipment? I have been following the text with VIRL virtualization without any problem. I strongly believe that VIRL is a great platform for learning Cisco technologies, so it deserves to be quoted at any Cisco textbook.

Anyway, thank you very much to Don Crawley for his great work, and I would like to encourage him in the same way with other topics.

Great reference!

I've referred to this quite a lot. Requires you to be a little forward thinking at times or have some background knowledge as there is some hand-holding, but not everything will be described in great detail. However, repeat the initial steps through repetitive situations and you'll get the lesson. I still refer to this when rigging characters. Great book though feels dated now.

This book was required by one of my 3d animation classes. after doing several of the tutorials my class mates and i realized that the authors frequently skip steps, have poor image examples, and are hard to learn from. i do not recommend this book to anyone.

Rough Guide vs. Lonely Planet

My friend and I visited Thailand earlier this month, and we conducted an experiment in the process: I used Rough Guide and she used Lonely Planet. We came up with similar trip plans, and we both turned to the Internet to fill in some blanks before squaring away our itinerary. Once on the road, we found ourselves using Rough Guide slightly more often than Lonely Planet.

Both guides are well organized and reasonably complete, but the Rough Guide's color maps are easier to read. While LP has more detail, it comes at the expense of readability, especially since the maps are not in color. The Rough Guide fails to adequately discuss elephant parks and other activity destinations around Chiang Mai. While LP does a better job, it still isn't complete, so I recommend using the Internet to get everything sorted out.

We did a back-to-back comparison of recommended Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai, and we found the LP recommendation to be superior. However, several restaurant listings are the same in both guides, and we did not encounter a bad Rough Guide recommendation on our journey. We found the Rough Guide's accommodation listings to be more helpful in Chiang Mai and Ko Phi Phi, but the LP recommendations are not lacking. I recommend consulting TripAdvisor to get a fuller picture of available options, as neither guide provides an exhaustive listing.

I like that the Rough Guide has full color and more photos, but the Lonely Planet guide excels at legibility. The Rough Guide switches between a couple fonts, one of which is quite difficult to read, and text does not always flow up-to-down, left-to-right in its two-column layout. LP is the clear winner here.

Both guides are overall winners. Generally speaking, I recommend Lonely Planet for Bangkok and destinations to the north and Rough Guide for destinations to the south. Rough Guide does have the advantage of not being LP; there is an unfortunate number of tourists who never try something that wasn't printed in an LP guide first. Don't be one of them and you'll have a great time in Thailand!

Key to an awesome trip

I brought this book for my Nov 2012 Thailand trip. I waited until the current issue came out (a month before my trip). Totally worth the money. Rough Guide was perfect for my Southern Thailand itinerary. I went to Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga and of course, Bangkok. I stayed in all the recommended spots from the book except at Koh Phi Phi. Everything in the book was accurate. I love how Rough Guide adds in their opinion. I picked up the Lonely Planet version for Thailand in the book store after my trip and noticed they were less opinionated and just stated facts. It also didn't have as much content as the Rough Guide. All the travelers I met during the trip used Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide actually had different hostels/hotels they recommend and I believe they had even more than Lonely Planet. The maps were easy to read. My Rough Guide was able to take a lot of abuse during the trip. If you are planning on going to Thailand, I would definitely recommend this book over others.

Great for browsing, only fair for actual research

Like most guidebooks, it's great for browsing, but it's already out of date. As a travel blogger, I find myself using it occasionally to round out (or sometimes confirm) a trip. It's rarely left the house (mainly because I'll take notes and e-mail them to myself), and it's heavy. That can't fairly be helped, but the font can - a light sans-serif font that's difficult to read in lower light. The smaller font size doesn't help either.

If you're planning an epic trip of Thailand, or prefer to browse travel guides, this is fine. If your trip will be less than a couple of weeks long, this is overkill.
