Paul Baines is Professor of Political Marketing and Programme Director MSc in Management, Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield University. He is author/co-author of more than a hundred published articles, book chapters and books, particularly on political marketing issues. Paul is an experienced author and editor whose publications include books on PR, marketing research, political marketing and strategy. Paul's marketing consultancy projects have included work for a variety of large public and private organisations including a high-profile football club, a large aerospace maintenance company, a national charity, an advertising agency, an awarding body, government departments, and a private jet start-up company. Chris Fill is a Director of Fillassociates. Formerly a Principal Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, Chris now works with a variety of private and not-for-profit organisations including several publishers. About the Author
W. Raymond Duncan is Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the State University of New York, Brockport. He received his PhD in International Relations at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts-Harvard, Medford, Massachusetts. In addition to his position at SUNY Brockport, he has taught at Boston University, the University of Rochester, Georgetown University, and the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He has also served as Scholar-in-Residence at the National Intelligence Council in Langley, Virginia.

Barbara Jancar Webster received her PhD in International Relations and a Certificate from the Harriman Institute from Columbia University. She was professor of political science and international relations at SUNY Brockport for more than 25 years. Her professional focus is the political economy of Eurasia and Central and Eastern Europe, with particular emphasis on the status of women and environmental policy and management.

Bob Switky received his PhD from the Claremont Graduate University. He has taught at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Sonoma State University, and SUNY Brockport. He also teaches in the political science subfields of comparative politics and international political economy.

Was impressed when it was delivered like new, however

after reading the first 20 pages, the gule binding stopped working. So now as I read the pages I just put them in a pile and put a big document clip to keep from losing them. If it were not for that it would be a perfect book. It must be old, or not stored well.

It was on time, and what I thought was a great sale. Used it for two chapters for this class and then found out that someone had an issue with the entire chapter 12 and it is missing. So much for a school textbook without random chapters!

I love this book, it is so specific and simple , simple to understand. I hate books that are wordy so much so that you get lost in the material, this book is to the point and specific in content. I recommended this book to anyone who likes things simple, precise and specific to content.

Excellent, if occasionally muddled

This is the in-depth TM1 manual we have all been waiting for. It contains a host of useful tips and a great deal of in-depth analysis and explanation of the inner workings of TM1. Truly excellent sections on the structure of TM1 in memory, how to calculate resources required, sparse consolidation and feeders.

I do have a few criticisms:

1. Part I, which is essentially a discussion of why you would want TM1 in the first place, seems incongruous in a largely technical book. Any person who can benefit from the in-depth stuff doesn't need persuading: they will already have TM1.

2. Occasionally the English grammar is poor. Perhaps English is not the native language of the writers. Elsewhere this might not matter, but with extremely complex technical detail, the problems become apparent as you try to unravel the linguistic muddle.

3. The authors, presumably because of some branding/copyright issue, use the term "Cognos TM1" throughout. I calculated that this adds several unnecessary pages to the book. Every single user of this software, except perhaps the brand manager of IBM, knows it as "TM1". Come on, let's be sensible.

Great for Corporate Finance

This guide fills an important need for corporate financial professionals deploying TM1 in reporting and planning activities. I wish we had this kind of comprehensive guide when we first deployed TM1 in a public company some years ago. We succeeded rolling TM1 out for basic financial reporting functions, but had to discover ways to extend its usefulness. That was a slower discovery process than it needed to be. This guide includes solid ideas and examples for putting TM1 to use, including all-important ways to support the senior management team through dashboards and scorecards. TM1 as a tool can transform the role of Finance in a company and this guide has everything needed to make that achievable.

Too complicated and poorly written

If you are new to TM1, don't touch this book. After giving high level overview and marketing it jumps straight to the most complex topics like how TM1 handles rules and feeders. I was trained and certified in TM1 and I could get that with slow reading, but I don't think anyone without such background will have any use of this book.

About the Author
Steve Bechtel is a nutrition expert, performance coach, and personal trainer. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1995 with a degree in Exercise Physiology. He has been working with athletes of all levels for over fifteen years, and is a sought-after expert in training for rock climbing and bouldering. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and is a certified coach with USA Cycling, USA Weightlifting, Kettelbell Athletics, and USA Triathlon. Steve is also a well-known adventure rock climber. He has made nearly 300 first ascents on 6 continents and has been to the top of some of the world’s hardest big wall climbs. He is the co-founder (with his wife, Ellen) of Elemental Performance + Fitness, a full service training center and climbing gym in Lander, Wyoming.

Pamphlet

This was entertaining and held useful information, but the brevity of the book gave me pause. While worth reading, especially if you are gym-bound and looking for specific workouts, I'd suggest Dave MacLeod's book, as well as any training book by Horst, Dan Hague's book, the Sagar and Ilg books, as well as Goddard+Neumann's before this one. All are worth reading and contain useful information but all of my suggestions go into much greater detail than the title being reviewed. Check the page count and see if you think it's worth the skrilla. For a couple bucks more you might get a lot more in depth information. 60 pages is a long pamphlet to me.

Great Book. Informative. Game changing, but defeated by length and price.

Thanks to Amazon Prime, I was able to borrow this book free of charge on my Kindle. Having read this book in about an hour (with full highlighting and note annotation), my rating is based solely on price and not on content. As far as content goes, Climb Strong: Power Endurance by Steve Bechtel is very rich for its short 64 pages, but, to quote Mr. Dink from the hit 90's cartoon Doug, "Very Expensive!"

I can say that this short training guide changed the way I'll look at my climbing practice sessions forever. Bechtel offers an excellent primer for the novice to intermediate climber to begin to apply purpose to the way he trains. Included are various training ideologies and the science behind building physical strength and stamina in climbing, followed by climbing "exercises" or circuits, and finally the two are combined into full season long training programs.

What I like about Climb Strong: Power Endurance is how Bechtel tends to steer away from weight training or aerobics, arguing that the best way to train these capacities as a climber is to CLIMB. Following the exercises and programs puts you hands-on the wall 95-100% of the time.

The Bottom Line: I got a lot out of this book. I know if I apply what I've learned here, I will become a better climber. For ~$12, the hard copy price is right, but if I hadn't received the book free as a Kindle owner and Prime member, I wouldn't pay $9.99 for only 64 pages of information. For comparison, I picked up the Kindle edition of The Rock Warrior's Way: Mental Training For Climbers, a nearly 200 page book, for $5.99.

Solid practical advice, no evidence

I enjoyed this little book. It offers practical advice for training, which is paired down to be stupid simple.

The author notes very early in the book that he thinks someone should be regularly climbing for several years before considering these training plans though. Be warned that he may write you off soon after you get into the book.

Further, Steve doesn't offer much in the way of science or research to back up the claims in this book. Even so, his experience is so extensive that is easy to buy into the plans based on that alone.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT Nowhere is the belief that we are what we eat held more steadfastly than among the brethren of the Rastafari. There is good reason to shun additives, preservatives, all processed foods, all that is generally eaten which has no direct root in nature. For this reason the Rastafari always cook without added salt, a practice commonly known as 'Ital'.

TO BE IRIE IS TO BE AT ONE WITH NATURE
The state of being at one with nature, being at peace with oneself, with all the things around us is of the highest states. This is the natural high, and as it derives in music and chant, so it derives in good health and vitality, in the nature of the food we eat, the fruits and vegetables, the spices and the herbs.

ITAL IS VITAL
In Rasta cooking the natural flavour of each dish is embellished through the use of spices and herbs which compliment the natural essence of the ingredients. All care should be taken to preserve the natural purity of ingredients used in the preparation of 'Ital' food. This caring should extend from the preparation and serving, to eating. For this reason the devout brethren of the Rastafari will use only utensils made from natural materials, stone, earthenware. The matching of herbs or spice with vegetable is the result of a long and skilfully laid tradition originating from the African ancestry and cultural heritage of the Rastafari.

The herbs and spices are also fruits of the earth and are as such essential ingredients to the diet of the vital man.

The most widely used of the spices is pepper, fresh ripe peppers. The most piquant of the spices.

The most widely used herb is marijuana, use of which is prohibited by law in the UK and a number of other countries. It is, however, the strongest of the herbs, and in the tradition of the Rastafari unlimited by dish. It sweetens and embellishes all, baked, boiled, fried or stewed.

The spirit of Rasta is everywhere. As western man has set himself against the many essentials at the nature from which he was born, so he yearns to find peace with the world, to arrest the destruction of things which are natural, of himself.

Where better to halt the destruction but at the point where the body interfaces with nature, with the food we eat. Eat Rasta

I really like the simple recipes in this book. I made the Jamaican dumplings with my kids and they really liked them. This is an excellent book for anyone who likes to make fresh organic foods.

But they are great, easy recipes :)) I read it almost daily. Full of vegan recipes. My carrot fritters came out tasting terrible though.. We'll see.
