A wonderful contribution to our understanding of OCD

The problem with most psychoanalytic case studies is that they end the moment the patient walks out the door. We just have to take it on faith that the psychoanalyst is correct when he says that the neurosis has been resolved or that the patient was cured. This is particularly true of Freud's study of the Rat Man ("Notes Upon a Case of Obsessional Neurosis"). The Rat Man (aka Ernst Lanzer) was an Austrian Army officer who came to see Freud after developing a disabling case of obsessive compulsive disorder. Freud worked with the man (and wrote about it in fascinating detail) for about a year at which point Freud declared that Lanzer was cured! But was he?
In Freud and the Rat Man, Patrick Mahony picks up the case from the moment Ernst Lanzer left Freud's office for the last time. Mahony poured through Freud's archives and traveled to Austria to look up long lost records that enable him to piece together the final years of Lanzer's life. Freud and the Rat Man provides the crucial second act to the gripping story of Lanzer's life (in addition to some insightful commentary on Freud's original case study).
This book should be essential reading for anyone interested in Freud, psychoanalysis, or OCD. This book is one of three by Mahony (the other two are Cries of the Wolf Man and Freud's Dora) that follow the lives of Freud's most famous patients after they left his office.

Perfect book for helping small children with their grief.

I bought this book to help my four year old daughter deal with the future grief of losing my father. It is such a difficult topic because at this age children are still not fully capable of understanding the permanency of death. She still has trouble understanding that he will never come back. However, she frequently asks to read this book at times when she is really missing him and wants to talk about it. This book has good questions towards the end that can help to get little ones talking about how they are feeling. In one particularly touching moment, the questions led to a good discussion where she told me that she thinks about him often and realizes that he lives on in her, just like in the Lion King.

I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with how to help their children deal with their grief. Warning, you will probably need tissues as you read through the book, but it is a good way to get both of you talking about your feelings at a very difficult time.

Easy to understand

We had 2 deaths in this month both where there were small children left behind. A 24 year old father and a Grandmother. Because of this I searched for books on death directed at young children. I Miss You,: A First Look at Death is wonderful. Written very well addressing small children. I like where it says "When someone dies their body stops working". You can never tell a child that they were sick, because they are afraid if they get sick. If you tell them they died while sleeping, they will not want to go to sleep. If you say they were old, they don't want to get old. I had one child's grandmother had a lot of back pain and it ended up being cancer. Then he thought if you got a back ache you would go to heaven. This is a fantastic book on death for children and I highly recommend it to have on hand before you need it although it arrives fairly quickly. I am an owner/operator of a daycare for over 40 years and have just introduced this into my daycare.

Good book for intended audience

I bought this book for our four-year-old grandson who is very curious about death, asking poignant questions about the subject.

This book appears to be tailored for children, probably a little older than four, who have recently experienced the loss of someone close to them. Besides the text for the child, it has some notes to the adults about how to present and discuss the material. I recommend not pursuing that path if the child is too young to understand the subject matter at that depth.

Omitting the sidebars, this book is well done, even for our four-year-old.

About the Author
Anita Mountain has been working nationally and internationally since 1990. An essential guide for all managers!

This book provides an inspiring new approach to leadership and management. Unlike many self-help guides it has helped me to look at what is working well as what areas I might like to improve. I have had no prior knowledge of transitional analysis and I was impressed how the authors have skilfully presented the concepts in an easily accessible way. The real-life examples are particularly valuable and have helped me adopt a mindful approach in my interactions with others, rather than simply following my reflexes and old habits. The strategies presented in the book have encouraged me to `experiment' and have go at `unsticking' previous stumbling blocks both in the workplace and at home, and as a result I've been able to successfully resolve a number of `difficult' issues that I would have previously tried everything to avoid. I would recommend it to anyone who would like to follow a structured approach to help overcome everyday frustrations and improve productivity and motivation in the work place.

It puts human interaction using the transactional analysis model into very simple terms that are easy to understand. If you are visual and you like to see concepts and theories illustrated in simple pictures and models this book is a treasure trove of illustrations for you. As a professional trainer, I found it very useful in providing practical illustrations of dysfunctional communications and simple actions to minimize dysfunction.

Anita's and Chris' book is a very good mentor for all subjects you may encounter in your business- and also your private life.
You learn all about communication, recognizing, making contracts, game playing, leadership, bullying, culture, life balance, in order to cite only some of the valuable chapters of this book. About the Author
Edna Holmes grew up, a country girl, the third one of ten children. The rich and varied experiences of her childhood are often referenced in her writing. She married her "soldier home from the war" at an early age and five years later they both became Christians through a personal faith in Jesus Christ. Their focus changed immediately. Years later her husband became the pastor of a church in Grapevine, TX. He would serve faithfully in that pastorate for forty-two years. Within those decades the church grew to be strong in their missions outreach: contributing to the support of many missionary families serving all over the world. Edna was privileged to travel with her husband to many countries as he visited the missionaries, encouraging them in their work. She learned from experience that Christian women all over the world, in all cultures, have the same basic needs and desires of the heart. Edna's priority in the ministry was to teach women, at every opportunity, the Word of God and encourage them to make it the guide of their lives. Treasures to Keep was born when the church women encouraged her to write a daily devotional book for them. She produced it in monthly segments, which later were combined and printed into a complete one-year devotional book. In that form, it began to be circulated outside the church to other women. Many lives have been affected by its plain, easy to understand, teaching. Edna would later say, "It was the hardest work I ever did in my life, but also the most rewarding."

This daily devotional is encouraging as well as convicting. You will be encouraged to a closer walk with the Lord and be inspired to get in His Word and dig deeper yourself. Mrs. Holmes writes in a colorful way that will engage you, yet this is an easy read that can be done in just a few minutes to start your day off right. I highly recommend this book not only for personal devotions, but also as s group devotion. Love this book!

Un libro clásico que se quedó viejo

De seminarista aprecié mucho este libro, pero ahora naturalmente observo que el autor hizo todo lo que pudo en su momento, sin embargo desde mi punto de vista ya ha sido superado. Esta es una gran obra, no cabe la menor duda en el mundo protestante. Sin embargo es muy clara su postura calvinista, la cual está en todo su derecho estar, sin embargo me parece que es un poco prejuicioso hacia otras escuelas teológicas. En suma es un buen libro que conviene tener para consulta pero no ya como el libro de "cabecera" para la Teología Sistemática en el mundo protestante y evangélico.

Teología Sistematica, de Berkhof, es muy libro muy claro en sus enseñanzas, claro y fácil de comprender. Recomendado para todos aquellos que aman el estudio de la Teología y están interesados en comprender más aun las escrituras.

Excellent translation

This is an excellent translation form the original Systematic theology by Berkhof. I have compared both versions (English-Spanish) and they are very similar.

If you are a seminary student you definitely want to buy this book.
