English Culture and the Decline of the Industrial Spirit, 1850-1980, by Martin J. Wiener

England was the world's first great industrial nation yet, paradoxically, the English have never been comfortable with industrialism. Drawing on a wide array of sources, Martin Wiener explores the English ambivalence towards modern industrial society. His work reveals a pervasive middle- and upper-class frame of mind hostile to industrialism and economic growth. From the middle of the nineteenth century to the present, this hostility shaped a broad spectrum of cultural expression, including literature, journalism, and architecture, as well as social, historical and economic thought. In this new edition Wiener reflects on the original debate surrounding his work and examines the historiography of the past twenty years.

Good cultural history, but it falls short of its goals
By A Customer
In this book, Martin J. Wiener attempts to explain Britain's general postwar economic decline by a pointing to a decline in the "industrial spirit" of English culture. This decline, he suggests, began in the nineteenth century, not long after the industrial revolution itself was in full swing. By examining literature, art, poetry, political statments, philosophy, social habits, and other cultural documents (even song and music), Wiener seeks to outline the decline of this industrial spirit over a 130-year period and thereby explain Britain's economic decline.
In fact, what Wiener ends up tracing is not really a "decline in an industrial spirit", but rather the *growth of an anti-industrial spirit*. This is not quite the same thing. It's one thing to note that many people in England were (and still are) critical of the ugliness, exploitativeness, and money-mindedness of modern industrial capitalism-- and that many of them came to feel a strong nostalgia for Old England, with it's rural, pre-industrial way of life. It's quite another to show that people actually became less interested in investing in industrial enterprises, in building factories, etc. To Wiener's credit, he does show that this anti-industrial spirit was *not* limited to working-class movements or romantic poets, but that it was actually shared by some bourgeois industrialists themselves-- at least to a certain degree. (I'm not 100% convinced, though, that the millionaire factory-owner who lives in a country estate to be away from the ugliness of the industrial cities, and who lets others direct the 'grubby' details of business management and financial investment can trulybe said to have embraced an 'anti-industrial spirit'). However, Weiner fails to show that any of this led to an actual decline in enthusiasm for-- or actual investment in-- industrial enterprises. Nor does he provide any evidence that this diffuse anti-industrial sentiment led to government policies or economic decisions by anyone that would stifled economic growth and led to an economic decline (which was, of course, the whole point of the book).
When all's said and done, Wiener doesn't provide a compelling explanation of Britain's economic decline. I'm convinced that this anti-industrial sentiment is very real in England, and I'm willing to believe it could be a factor in explaining Britain's postwar decline-- but I just don't think Wiener makes the case here. That said, he does provide an excellent account of the growth of anti-industrial sentiment in English culture, and as such, this book is well worth reading as a work of pure cultural history.

'England is the country and the country is England'
By A Customer
Martin J. Wiener does an excellent job describing England's lack of committment to the industrial spirit and the very real economic impact such a philosophical malaise engendered.
The author logically begins his thesis by pointing to 19th Century English cultural and political elites from across the political spectrum who decried the mechanical horrors of the Industrial Revolution. From the 'philosophical radical' JS Mill to the pragmatic Conservative Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin (ironically, the son of an industrialist), Wiener displays a general consensus among the ruling and influential elites of England that industrial development is, essentially, not right for 'Little England.' Other Conservatives at the turn of the century, such as Lord E. Percy, felt that laissez-faire was best left with America as the U.S. 'was more favorably placed for her less noble experiment of unrestrained growth.'
I disagree with previous Reader's (Silicon Valley) judgement that Wiener fails to provide 'provide any evidence that this diffuse anti-industrial sentiment led to government policies or economic decisions'. This is simply wrong. Chapter 6 (Images and Politics) provides a very real example of how the elites' disdain for industrial reform/innovation led to unfortunate legislative consequences: Joseph Chamberlain (Colonial Secretary of the Conservative Party) failed to pass much-needed tariff reform legislation (part of a sweeping economic program to re-energize England's fledgling industrial economy) because of ingrained political resistance to 'strenuous' economic resurgence. Further in the same chapter, Wiener points to policies for rural preservation and revivalism made by Conservatives in power. Such policies and, more importantly, deep-seeded mentalities hindered England's economic modernization as other industrial nations around her moved forward.
Wiener does a great job illustrating how romantic notions of pastoral 'purity' have very real economic consequences when political leaders espouse to such views to the detriment of modernization. England's ultimate failure to fully embrace industrialism allowed other industrial nations (ie Germany, U.S., France), with no such qualms, to move forward to the top of the heap.

Perception and Misperception in International Politics (Center for International Affairs, Harvard University), by Robert Jervis

This study of perception and misperception in foreign policy was a landmark in the application of cognitive psychology to political decision making. The New York Times called it, in an article published nearly ten years after the book's appearance, "the seminal statement of principles underlying political psychology."

The perspective established by Jervis remains an important counterpoint to structural explanations of international politics, and from it has developed a large literature on the psychology of leaders and the problems of decision making under conditions of incomplete information, stress, and cognitive bias.

Jervis begins by describing the process of perception (for example, how decision makers learn from history) and then explores common forms of misperception (such as overestimating one's influence). Finally, he tests his ideas through a number of important events in international relations from nineteenth- and twentieth-century European history.

In a contemporary application of Jervis's ideas, some argue that Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 in part because he misread the signals of American leaders with regard to the independence of Kuwait. Also, leaders of the United States and Iraq in the run-up to the most recent Gulf War might have been operating under cognitive biases that made them value certain kinds of information more than others, whether or not the information was true. Jervis proved that, once a leader believed something, that perception would influence the way the leader perceived all other relevant information.

Review
"The best statement of the psychological position in the literature on international politics. Highly readable, informative, and thought-provoking."--Library Journal

From the Back Cover
This book demonstrates that decision-makers' perceptions of the world and of other actors diverge from reality in patterns that we can detect and for reasons that we can comprehend. Drawing on a wide range of historical cases, Robert Jervis shows how this knowledge can be used not only to explain specific decisions but also to account for patterns of interaction and to improve our understanding of international relations.

amazing overuse of passive voice

To be concise (which Jervis seems to be incapable of) I'll say that if you can get through the extraneous prose, amazing overuse of passive voice, and massive run on sentences it's a great book. It was like reading a Medieval scroll of truly revolutionary International Relations concepts.

Before Tversky and Kahneman, there was Jervis. Read one of the base steps in the pyramid to behavioral decision making in political science.

The Ten Commandments. Do you see them as a strict set of rules with a punishment for disobedience? Do you think they are outdated, without meaning for us today? Or might they be a blueprint for your life, designed by a loving and gracious God? The law that He spoke into being on the mountainside so long ago is still active and applicable to our lives now. Mark Mitchell shows us how we can embrace both God’s law and His gospel of grace to find true freedom.

Think of the Ten Commandments. What comes to your mind? Rules . . . Obligations . . . Freedom? Many tend to see the Ten Commandments as a list of dos and don’ts given by a demanding God. Instead, we should view them as a road map to freedom provided by a powerful yet gracious God. God gave His people the Ten Commandments after He led them out of their slavery in Egypt. He didn’t want to enslave them all over again with heavy, unattainable rules. These decrees were meant to enrich their relationship with Him and with others. And they still apply to us today. The Ten Commandments are not old-fashioned or outdated—they are still God’s way of showing us our sin, keeping us on track, and helping us fix our eyes on Him. So take a new look at the Ten Commandments. As we embrace God’s law and the gospel of grace, we can walk the path of true freedom.

Powerful and refreshing; a must read for all!
By Ronda OLeary
Growing up I always thought of the Ten Commandments as a rule book of "no-no's"; instead, as Mitchell writes, they were given to us because He loves us, and wants us to know the freedom they offer. This book has challenged me to look at them from a different perspective; it will now remain on my nightstand to refer to often!

It sets you free
By Amazon Customer
I toughly enjoyed reading Ten. Mark Mitchell writes in an engaging way about what happened that day when “the mountain blazed with fire to the very heavens… and the Lord spoke out of the fire… and declared his covenant, the Ten Commandments” (Dt 4:11-13). With thoughtful and skilled exegesis, Dr. Mitchell demonstrates how each commandment leads us along the path to freedom and authenticity. You can just snuggle into the book. I can’t think of a better book on the Ten Commandments for practical living—great for study groups, or small groups; or, just personal growth and understanding. It sets you free.

Ten: How the Commandments Set Us Free, by Mark Mitchell

Mark Mitchell has written a brief commentary on the Ten Commandments that throws light on the commands in their ancient setting and shows the relevance of the ’Ten Words” for the Church today. He has written an extremely well balanced book, no mean feat in a field in which writers tend to make too much, or too little of Israel’s Law. Mark is an exceptional writer, a clear thinker, and an accomplished theologian who lays head and heart together. The book is filled with truth and grace. You will be instructed, but more importantly, you will be drawn toward righteousness as you read his book.

Review
"Featuring an impressive line-up of speculative fiction luminaries-Mario Acevedo, Jason Heller, Jeanne C. Stein, Steve Rasnic Tem, Warren Hammond, etc.-this stellar collection of twenty nightmare-inducing short stories is appropriately titled: it's a check-underneath-the-bed-before-you-go-to-sleep kind of anthology." -PAUL GOAT ALLEN "Poe, Lovecraft, King-step aside for the new kids on the block who bring goose bump horror and pit-of-the-stomach dread to stories of the modern world and the future. Ebola in the heartland, an Iraq veteran with a problem, a high school bully who gets his due, a librarian with an exclusive clientele, a far-future alien race that delights in cruelty-the stories in Nightmares Unhinged deliver creepy surprises, sweat-inducing fear and chilling revulsion. These are stories by masters at their peak, stories you will still be thinking about long after you've laid down the book." -JESÚS TREVIÑO, director of Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Babylon Five "The sheep you so desperately count into slumber are about to sharpen their teeth, burrow into your brain and infest your dreams." -MARK HENRY, author of Battle of the Network Zombies "What is fear? It is many different things for each individual. What Joshua Viola has done in this anthology is touch on every exposed nerve one might have. Like a master chef in his kitchen, Viola manages to put together a delicious dish of 'Macabre Under Glass.' Some of the dishes may be challenging and new to your palette, but it is a many splendored meal with each course displaying its own variety of flavors. It was truly satisfying and yet, now, I am hungry for more even though I have a terrible time sleeping with such a full belly." -JONATHAN TIERSTEN, actor Sleepaway Camp "With a delicious story for seemingly every fear, Nightmares Unhinged features a treasure of writers-both established and rising-who know how to peel away all layers of protection and dig into your deepest phobias. These stories will leave you fascinated, vulnerable, and truly considering leaving your bedroom light on at night. If you are looking for short story horror at its creative peak, Nightmares Unhinged is a must-read." -CARTER WILSON, author of The Comfort of Black "This collection of chills by Colorado authors takes a retro, Twilight Zone approach to horror and offers it in a distinctly Western mood. There's a nostalgia to this book's type of creepy; fans of old-fashioned, midnight horror will enjoy. Best read after dark." -STANT LITORE, author of The Zombie Bible "Get ready for blood, terror and the unexpected in Nightmares Unhinged, a devilish anthology from a cast of superb writers." -MIKE BEFELER, author of Mystery of the Dinner Playhouse and The Paul Jacobson Geezer-Lit Mystery Series "Recommended doses of terrific and terrifying tales, Nightmares Unhinged is the perfect remedy for feeling just a little too cozy and secure." -J.L. ABRAMO, award-winning author of Gravesend "Less a collection of stories and more a warning list of places never to be-the library, fields with scarecrows, Mexican bars, the dentist, work parties, your neighbour's house, and if you're male and play golf, don't you ever, ever go looking for your balls under a bridge. A lot safer to just stay at home and read this book." -PAUL CAMPION, director of The Devil's Rock and VFX Artist for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Constantine and Sin City "From the moment you open Nightmare's Unhinged, it chokes the air from the room and leaves you holding your breath until you finally close its pages. Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, you'll never get rid of that sinking feeling it will leave with you." -JOSH DANFORTH, Celldweller Productions "Nightmares Unhinged has stories that will frighten even the most thick-skinned reader." -CAT ZINGANO, UFC Bantamweight Number One Contender

Dark Vibes
By Mark Stevens
These are some grisly bits here but to my way of thinking "Nightmare Unhinged," an anthology from Denver-area Hex Publishers, is 20 well-written tales with an overall dark vibe. Gore? Some. Cool story concepts with some fresh wrinkles? Why, yes. There are several that seemed to me, in fact, highly original. And 13 of the 15 writers live in Colorado so this is a fine showcase for this state's talent. (Please note, my tastes run to more fiction and mysteries; I'm outside my regular zone here.)

Steve Rasnic Tem’s understated and perfectly creepy “The Brollachan” starts things off but the horror is mostly by implication in a boy-meets-girl teenage tale with a dark twist. Tem slips in the juicy stuff when you’re not looking, right down to the love bites. A beauty.

J.V. Kyle’s “Fangs” takes a perverted run at a vampire who likes a twist with his blood—anesthetic. The craving leads him to realize that women in white uniforms are carriers of this special something. And soon he is in a dentist’s office and, well, the ending is pure piece of deft table-turning.

In “Be Seated,” Keith Ferrell tells a story about a special chair. The storyteller concedes to his own circumspect style of relaying events and the tale of murder requires full reader attention, no hand-holding allowed.

America is “coming down like dominoes” in “The Man Who Killed Texas,” by Stephen Graham Jones. The one is about “the cough” and a guy named Baylock and a militia holding the line against an insidious and deadly invasion that will test Baylock in a whole host of nerve-jangling ways—family values and all of that.

“Scarecrows,” by Joshua Viola, is brisk tale of comeuppance and justice and plays with the tropes of horror—the edge of town, teenage taunting, and things that come alive.

Mario Acevedo’s “Zou Gou” (Chinese for “lackey”) is a trippy bit of horror mixed with sci-fi—drones, robots, sex and armless human bodies who are part of a creepy experiment in resilience. A wild imagination at work.

Okay, by the time we get to “Needles,” co-written by Joshua Viola and Dean Wyant, we are finally (story #7) digging down in the grisly material. A desperate drug addict named Natalie takes a john, an overly generous man in a Dormeuil suit. Natalie gets hurt—and high. But things are never quite the same. The ending is both gory and gotcha. Think “Alien” on hallucination-inducing steroids.

Jason Heller’s “The Projectionist” is one of my favorites, riffing on nostalgia for old-school cinema versus robotic, remote-controlled digital projectors and the “flickering of fiction” in movie reels. The story features a 12-year-old boy and a movie projector which is like saying "The Exorcist" is about a young girl and her run-in with religion. This projector is not just any machine, but a lifelike thing with special powers. “The projector engulfed the entire booth. It wasn’t a large space, as far as I could tell. The machine filled it like a nest of serpents that had overgrown its terrarium. Instead of snakes, though, tubes and pistons and pneumatic cylinders twisted their way around the central mass of the apparatus, which wheezed and trembled like the torso or thorax of some impossible beast.” With terrific vocabulary, a nifty message and a genuinely scary concept, “The Projectionist” has a knockout a-peel.

Jeanne C. Stein brisk “The Wolf’s Paw” is a battle in Balboa Park (San Diego) between wolves and vampires, told from the point of view of Anna, Stein’s longtime heroine from The Anna Strong Chronicles. Like those books (I’ve only read a few) “The Wolf’s Paw” mixes fast action, strong emotions. It’s feral vs. civilized, both within and without.

Keith Ferrell returns with “Danniker’s Coffin,” a story about a 71-year-old who is a coffin maker’s son and planning to put up a fence around his property now that the neighbor’s house is empty. This thoughtful tale, as much a character portrait as anything else, touches on burial methods, fate, and self-determination. Beautifully written, this was one is practically genteel.

“Deep Woods” is Aaron Michael Ritchey’s quick tale of three girls in a pickup on the way to the old, familiar “cabin the woods” with creaking doors and a freak. Ritchey uses fast flourishes to set the scene and the monster. “A fringe of hair and balding, gnarled flesh. Pulpy, misshapen brow and cheeks. Wet mouth.” Yes, there will be axes. Yes, blood will fly. The final score is freak, _ and alive girls _. What? You thought I would tell?

Dustin Carpenter’s “Diamond Widow” offers a dark turn on black widows everywhere, insect and human. Logan “the stock broker” is lured into a lair of jewels where the pressure, shall we say, gets intense.

“Deep Woods” would also work as a title for “The Camera,” by Joshua Viola, a story about a couple that encounter strange items and creepy rangers in the woods. But all the world is a stage, it turns out, even way out in the middle of nowhere where fear can be exploited for maximum effect.

“Lost Balls,” by Sean Eads, is a pleasant little tale of golf except it’s not only the balls that go missing. This is a twisted take on “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” and acknowledges its roots within. Yes, “balls” has multiple meanings. Trolls, knives, testicles, and bargains with the world. The next time you hit a ball out of bounds, you might just go ahead and kiss it good-bye. Take your penalty and move on.

“Something about company affairs seem to jumpstart, well, company affairs, if you know what I mean.” That’s our narrator in “Bathroom Break” by J.V. Kyle about a fling with Linda, all suburbs on the outside and all Goth on the inside. That’s true for the house where she lives. And more. Our hero thinks he’s good at solving problems but overlooks cleaning up at the wrong time. Linda’s talents and inner drive can’t be underestimated.

“Marginal Ha’nts,” by Edward Bryant, is a touch of genius. Brilliant concept, brilliant delivery and spot on with day-to-day willies. Now we have an explanation for the “lukewarm hauntings and tepid terrors.” Moving to a new house? I think every real estate agent in the country should pass this out at closing. Enough said. The ending gave me a laugh.

“Juarez in July was like standing over a barbecue pit,” thinks Stuart near the beginning of “Delicioso,” by Warren Hammond. Here in Juarez, Stuart stands out as a “star” with white skin and American accent. Stuart is on the prowl and, at home behind the triple locks of his rooftop apartment, he has a whole toolbox by the sofa with what he needs. You know, a carrot peeler. And knives. “So many knives.” You know the rule about mentioning a knife in a horror story—it will get used. Hammond’s skills at taut storytelling are in full display here.

New librarian Emma has “outgrown the eyeliner and The Cure albums, but her infatuation with devilish things” remain. She’s being trained in Joshua Viola’s “The Librarian” and encounters a strange customer with odd habits. This one is part genie-in-a-bottle with a happy ending. Say what?

In Mario Acevedo’s “Gurgle Gurgle,” legalization of marijuana in Colorado and the standard yearnings of high schools boys are pureed in a frothy, funny story that also plays off genies and magic lamps, this time in very direct fashion. Genies take everything so literally, of course.

And, finally, Gary Jonas’ “Truth Or Dare” plays with unusual neighbors, mysterious basements and that common little habit of kids being carved to pieces. This one is not child’s play. You get the picture.

Jonas’ piece might be the final story, but it’s not the last piece of beautiful writing—that honor goes to Edward Bryant’s powerful and moving tribute to the late Melanie Tem, the author of a dozen or so novels and many, many short stories. The tribute to this remarkable “fantasist” will inspire awe—and make you want to read her books.

Don't be afraid; check out “Nightmares Unhinged.” Is it boot camp for the psyche? Maybe. One reader's squirm-inducing passage is another reader's yawn. But there are some nifty tales here, well-told. Basements, deep woods, Goth-loving officemates, well, you still might want to think twice.

Not all horror, but most were good reads
By Jessica Shook
This is a collection of works from many talented authors. I'll review each story on its own, since that's only fair.

The Brollachan - Steve Rasnic Tem: 3.8/5
The story was devoid of gore or sexual situations. It was engaging, though it did drag at some points. The reveal was a bit hollow, because the conclusion was obvious several pages before then. Writing style was easy to get into, and flowed well. I enjoyed the concept, and the "old wives tale" come to life sort of feel in the story.

Fangs - J.V. Kyle: 4.6/5
I really liked this story. Also devoid of sexual situations and gore. It had a very fun, even playful, concept. It plays a bit on addiction, which is a very welcome addition to the story. The only reason it didn't earn a 5/5 was that I saw it coming a few pages in. The writing style was on par with what you'd expect for a horror short: snappy, and quick paced.

Be Seated - Keith Ferrell: 4.2/5
Very odd story. Again, no gore or sexual situations, but something... cultish... about it. You never really discovered much about what it was going on in that chair, in that house, by that hearth, but I think that made it all the more intriguing. I think the mystery was a lot of what the story had going on for it. The blank space used to talk about the narrator's subject matter, "Mr. A____", was a bit jarring to read so many times, and so I felt the flow suffered a bit because of it.

The Man Who Killed Texas - Stephen Graham Jones: 3.8/5
This story was only a tiny bit gory, but no sexual situations. It was a fun read, and very near to how I think the actual situation (post viral outbreak) would go down. It was a bit longer than necessary to convey the story at hand, but was still effective and interesting, not to mention sad. The style was easy to read.

Scarecrows - Josh Viola: 4.2/5
No gore or sexual situations, but triggers if bullying gets you. The story was touching, and vengeful. The writing was easy to read, and flowed well.

Zou Gou - Mario Acevedo: 4.6/5
I'm a sucker for sci-fi, so my rating might be a little biased. Both gore and sexual situations present in this one, but it didn't detract or distract from the story. I cringed about twice, the first time so far for Nightmares Unhinged. It was interesting and odd, deserved much more than a few pages. I've heard there is a full length novel to follow, which I'm drooling for in anticipation if it meets the quality of this short.

Needles - Josh Viola & Dean Wyant: 4.8/5
Sexual situations, and rape triggers, and a splash of gore at the end. I cringed unendingly at this story. I get a bit eeeeeeeee about rape, so that had me crossing my legs. It was creepy as hell, flowed great, but could have been paced better (probably the reason for falling short of 5). Another story with heavy addiction mentions.

The Projectionist - Jason Heller: 4.4/5
Did I just do drugs? Like... all the drugs? This is possibly the goriest story of the lot, and contains not only sexual situations, but... I think incest. I'm not sure how else to feel about this other than it was extremely interesting, but also confusing. I was left with a lot of questions, much like "Be Seated". I cringed at this one quite a bit, but the pacing and writing were both excellent.

The Wolf's Paw - Jeanne C. Stein: 2.6/5
I suppose my assessment of this is not completely fair, since I know this short was pulled from a longer work. However, it is not a very good standalone. The story was not well told in the few pages it was given, and I did not enjoy the writing style. The entire thing was quick, snappy, and there was no pause. I'm assuming the entire work was not written this way, and this was just one very quick, intense part of an otherwise well paced story. I'm not able to tell, since I did not read the full work.

Danniker's Coffin - Keith Ferrell: 3.6/5
No gore or sexual situations for this one. It was not scary, or cringe worthy, yet quite sad. So, so realistically sad. It was a bit drawn out, but I think that lent to the depressing nature of it. The story was slow and long, as said, but flowed well.

Deep Woods - Aaron Michael Ritchey: 4/5
Gore present, but no sex. I liked this take on the "monster in the woods" kind of story. I was pleased with the way it ended. The pacing was great, and the narration easy to read.

Diamond Widow - Dustin Carpenter: 3/5
No sex, not really gore either. I wanted to like this story, but from the title and first two paragraphs, I knew the whole story. That's pretty depressing... =( I don't like being able to predict what's going to happen, it takes all the fun out. It was well written and paced, and a fun play on a damsel in distress.

The Camera - Josh Viola: 3.8/5
Some sexual content, not much gore. This story made me seeth a bit. It's narrated by a female whose fiance is a douche turd. I wanted to punch him in his douchy face. Fortunately, that wasn't necessary. There were some unpredictable elements, which was nice after Diamond Widow, but I did foresee the end. It was well paced and written.

Lost Balls - Sean Eads: 3.6/5
Here's another one I'm biased on, simply because I disdain golf, and it played a decent roll in the story. Please don't tell my grandfather, but it's the most useless, boring "sport" on the planet. The pacing was a bit slow, but when it picked up, it really picked up. I did get a chill, and I could see the environment around the bridge, so that was all very well done. Damn it, why'd it have to be lame golf >.

Should've trimmed the (heavy) fat!
By Maxine Shaw, attorney at LOL
Here's an example of how dizzying excitement can turn into disappointment: Kraken Opus overhyped this book as such a rare piece of MJ history, constantly pushing the preorders, only to turn around and sell it at online bookstores for over $100 less! Even though I got mine for $165 (plus $30 shipping), I still could've saved about $40 had I ordered it here. Additionally, perhaps this is the regular size of an opus, but THIS was an opus that was constantly toted as a "coffee table book". This is not a coffee table book. This is a coffee table. It comes up to my knee (I'm 5'9"), and is not only heavy, but LARGE, a very uncomfortable carry. Additionally, the digital extras - the one thing I was MOST excited about - are nowhere to be found. Supposedly they're coming later. Well, supposedly this was a rare, must-have, and supposedly, it was full of never-before-seen pictures, and supposedly...you get the idea.

What goes into a 400-page, 30-lb book? Not a whole lot. Most of this is stuff that you already know: Michael came from humble Indiana roots, performed with the Jackson 5, broke away to do Off the Wall, was a genius, redefined music and dance as we know it, blah blah blah. Most of the exclusive pictures are variations of pictures that you've already seen. Or there may be a page full of pictures on one film-like sheet, most of them extremely similar, if not identical. Most disappointingly, there aren't any real "behind-the-scenes" pictures OR insight; no pics of Michael just relaxing and being Michael. Nearly all of them are MICHAEL JACKSON, the performer, but none of Mike, or MJ, or Smelly, or whatever his friends called him. There aren't even many photos of Michael the humanitarian. NO photos of him from the set of The Wiz or Captain Eo, only a few of his video shoots (and I do mean a FEW), and yet there are so many pictures of him standing on his toes in a fedora that I could scream. Speaking of Scream, one thing I was really, REALLY looking forward (other than those digital photos) were some pictures from the set of Scream, because the (few) shots in color are so beautiful. But while there are tons of pics of Michael on the set, there's only one of Michael and Janet, and they're covered in silly string. Aside from photos of his J5 days, there are virtually no pictures of his family, not even his mother or children. An entire chapter dedication to MJ's fashion sense, but not even 10 pages about his family - whom, by most accounts, he loved very much? There are lots of pictures of commissioned art pieces of Michael - most with a Peter Pan motif - and some fan art. In fact, there's probably more art than pics of all of his family combined - and that includes the Jackson 5.

One of the main reasons why I bought this opus is because I refuse to buy anything that continues to perpetuate the LIES told about MJ, but I wasn't exactly looking for little more than a walk down memory lane. The reason why we buy these thing is BECAUSE we want to know more - more about his work and his vision. What inspired him? How did he come up with so many amazing ideas, time after time? What did he think about his own work? What drove him to continue to work so hard when far lesser "legends" would've rested on their laurels? If you're going to interview a bunch of people who supposedly knew this man, tell me a little bit more than his love for practical jokes and Charlie Chaplin!

Supposedly (there's that word again) Michael was working w/Kraken Opus for this project. I seriously doubt this is what Michael actually had in mind, because as we saw with "This Is It", Michael knows what his fans want to see. I'm sure he also knew what his fans had already seen, and if there's one thing Michael would never do, it's sell the same old thing to his audience. With every page turn, I found myself growing more and more disappointed and frustrated; towards the end, I was just browsing, very relieved that I hadn't embarrassed myself by taking it to the Christmas party (full of MJ fans). If you want to read a buttload of anecdotes full of information you already know from people who may or may not have even met Michael or seen him any time this century, go for it. If you're looking for a book far too heavy to carry around that you'll probably just store under your bed, this is it. But I can honestly say, without a drop of bias, that you're better off buying a few of the well-done MJ tributes on the newsstands - tributes that are nice enough to keep on your coffee table, and practical enough to scan all those lovely photos. As for me...anybody wanna buy an opus?

The Official Michael Jackson Opus
By photowhoseit
I just finished reading MJ's Opus. What struck me was it's totally positive. Not a word about the troubles he faced. The table of contents goes right to the essence of his being. Here are the names of the chapters; Child Star, Voice, Composer, Moonwalk (discussed him as an innovator of dance), Vision (discussed how he was so incredibally progressive ), One Glove (How he used fashion to build himself into a global icon), Friend, Heart (his humanitarian efforts), Art Lover, and Global Icon. There are tons never before seen of high quality photos. There are also plenty of photos you have seen before but have more in the photo because they haven't been cropped. There are no photos that have the most important part (like MJ''s face) in the spine of the book. I only learned a few new things about MJ but what was presented was done so in a very eloquent way. My favorite contribution in the book was written by the person who won the essay contest put out by the [...] website. It's on page 393. The contest topic was "What Does Michael's Legacy Mean to You?" The 25 year old winner had a really good handle on what MJ was all about. She has a future as a writer. I also liked the fan art. I think it is what MJ would have wanted in the book. Some of the fan art isn't all that great but MJ loved his fans talented or not. Of the 26 fan art pictures, I liked about 1/2 of them. There is one I absolutely love. He is dressed like Peter Pan. He's on his toes with knees bent like the dance pose we so often see. The background is wooded with mountains in the distance. There are butterflies around his head and a blimp type airship. That artist has promise. She captured the essence of MJ. Before I read that these were fan art I thought that one was done by Giorgio or Nordahl the artists MJ had commisioned to do art work for him. The book itself weighs 16 1/2 pounds; with the case it weighs 23 pounds. I weighed it. So it does not weigh as much as they say in the media.

I can't wait to get the video reality card Opus has promised. I hope the footage is never before seen footage. Another addition that would have been nice is having the text in the book duplicated in a smaller paperback and included with the big book. It was a pain in the rear trying to read from such a huge book. I would have liked to curl up in bed and read instead of bending over a coffee table. If you want to know more about MJ's molestation charges read Redemption by Geraldine Hughes and The Michael Jackson Conspiracy by Aphrodite Jones. My heart breaks when I think what the media did to such a sweet, loving, and caring man. Until I got to know who MJ was, I did not believe in God. Now I know there has to be a God. Someone like MJ is not put on this earth by accident.

Almost Great
By Waldo McSheepington
NEGATIVES:

1. Incorrect dates. I've noticed a few of them. 1979 is very different from 1984, right? This makes me think that either this was a very hurried effort - i.e. "Get it out there while people are still interested in his death!" or that it just wasn't proofread properly. Either way - not good. Not for hundreds of dollars - and not for what should be the most accurate, sort of encyclopedic text on the man in existence.

2. Some of the choices for testimonials are a little questionable - like they couldn't find anyone better to comment on his fashion sense than Kimora Lee Simmons?

3. Photo Quality. Most of these photos look fuzzy. You would think they would be really crisp and high resolution on this beautiful glossy paper. Some of the photos of the paintings are much too blurry to see details. In the description it says something like "There's Janet Jackson, as a fairy in the foreground" - but then you look where this fairy is, and she's pretty much just a blur.

4. The Art Lover section. I personally enjoy these paintings, and I think some of them are funny and cute, but honestly these paintings, and the testimonials from the artists don't really do much in the way of making him look anything close to sane. I guess it doesn't really matter at this point.

5. Fan Art? Yeah... don't care. Sorry. Would rather have more pictures, or writing from Michael, quotes from him, more scanned documents or notes, some kind of timeline - any pertinent information would be more appreciated than that.

POSITIVES:

1. It's seriously HUGE. It really is impressive, and heavy. It feels like something grand that you would spend a lot of money on. The red cloth-covered box it comes in looks great, as well as the brush-stroke-style illustration on it.

2. There are many photos in it I hadn't seen before, and I've seen a lot of them.

3. The organization. I feel they covered all the main aspects of Michael Jackson as an artist and public figure. Childhood Stardom, Composing, Dancing, Singing, Humanitarianism, Videos, Fashion, Lover of Art... each one is accompanied by a spread of all red with another custom brush illustration as well to go with the section.

4. Some of the testimonials from and friends/associates are a little insightful if you read between the lines.

5. Michael would LOVE this book if he could see it (I think).

6. A real tribute to Michael is always nice to see. People think he's getting all these tributes left and right, maybe they think it's too many - but for long-time fans, he's been reviled and humiliated for the past 15 years in his own country, and it's nice for us to see fitting and loving public tributes to him - even if they are too late.

ostensibly it sounded like a conspiracy book
By dice
I came across this book as I met an enterprising young man hawking Life Leadership, seemingly a new multi-level marketing business. when I first laid eyes upon this book I was confronted with mixed emotions, ostensibly it sounded like a conspiracy book, after all most conspiracy theories or literature couch their arguments in language belonging to the Matrix franchise, concepts like the red pill, the matrix (i.e., systemic deception), adherents of these conspiracy theories often feel they are liberated or otherwise free from what everyone else is trapped in. It was no surprise that a book that has its front cover decorated with floating currency signs draped in sci-fi green coat would heavily use and abuse the Matrix narrative. My initial thought that it would be a conspiracy book was mostly untrue, but the book does definitely stray into conspiracy territory, especially with the dubious explanation regarding fractional reserve banking (explained more below).

Alas, the start of the book opens with a cringe inducing exchange taken straight from the Matrix where the author adds in brackets [Financial] next to the word Matrix into the dialogue between Neo and Morpheus. The author sums up what is going on, everyone is taking on debt and being buried, the author uses his own personal anecdotes to give a personal taste to his argument. His wife is pregnant and the news is troubling to the author because of the mounting debt, no surprise by the end of the book the author is relieved from his crushing financial obligations and presumably is willing to sell his plan to you at a subscription rate (Life Leadership). The problematic part with this is the over use of Matrix clichés (no surprise given the cover), the tired memes of blue and red pills, the awakening and escape and seeing the truth, ostensibly it sounds novel and prolific but it's bromidic. The 'truth' he sells is this: a system has been constructed to enslave you to debt and to keep you down. To bolster his claims he borrows from history and references slave systems and feudal systems, the modern debt paradigm is the just a new revision of that according to Woodward.

While Woodward probably figured that using the simple-to-digest Matrix narrative was best to connect with his audience, I feel this over simplifies the complexities of economics and finance and waving your hands and decrying that a cabal holds immense power and seeks to enslave you is a bold claim and I don't Woodward's account is convincing. While Woodward and I can probably find common ground on how the deck is stacked against the average joe, to allege there is some grand conspiracy or system that enslaves everyone analogously to the Matrix is an over extended enterprise. I suppose it is not as sexy to suggest that the global financial system is complex and nearly undecipherable. But admitting that it is complicated with no easy answers doesn't sell as well if there is a concrete enemy: the oligarch. The Matrix was easy to understand humans vs machines, Woodward (unoriginal in this regard) boils down the narrative to be everyone vs. oligarchs.

Probably one of the biggest flaws of this book is the rather sketchy reasoning to explain why the people are drowning in debt. Instead of directly blaming people becoming more self-centred and ostentatious focused, or keeping up with the joneses, neoliberalism, or other typical suspects, Woodward puts the blame at the doorstep of Fractional-reserve banking. Woodward's reasoning is rather simple: fractional-reserve banking works by a bank only having to have a fraction of money on hand held as deposits while it can loan out that money many times over. This allegedly allows a superfluous amount of credit to be created. While Woodward isn't attempting a serious economic tract on monetary policy, I found this proof to be too simplistic. Not to mention that credit wasn't invented with the ditching of the gold standards. I do agree that people are too trigger happy when it comes to swiping their credit card or too eager to buy another watercraft, but can you really blame fractional reserve banking? The inverse being that, if you removed this type of monetary system, would this problem go away? Probably not, credit would still be profitable to banks and Visa, so I would require more to be convinced of Woodward's thesis on fractional-reserve banking. I found his explanation unconvincing and even if fractional reserve banking was to blame I wouldn't be convinced from the arguments presented in this book.

The rest of the book is a blue print for financial success, this is where the author utilizes other billionaire's experiences, referencing Warren Buffet, Sam Walton and Robert Kiyosaki. Woodward references the common financial tricks: attack/defence (i.e., the standard accounting response to budgeting: reduce spending, increase revenue). Woodward lays out a few more, but I'll let the reader discover them, because at only 120 pages or so this book is fairly short. I believe Woodward made a calculated move to have a short book, as the gentlemen from Life Leadership told me many people do not like to read and the sales pitch has to be made in account of a short attention span of potential readers. Woodward is just writing to his audience, which is fine. But I found of only 100 pages of actual material the book was lacking. But as I got to the end I was surprised to see a 25ish page FAQ about MLM, Life Leadership and a falling out Woodward had with some others, I skimmed this part because I was wholly uninterested in joining a MLM and had no idea who Woodward was, so it was uninteresting.

As way of summary, I am not the target audience of this book. I am convinced this book is for prospective Life Leadership recruits, or people who are entirely new to financial self-help books. In that case you may find this book interesting or informative. For those people I would suggest picking up a few other books as well , as this is only really a small taste of the literature that is out there. For people who are uninterested in joining Life Leadership, or have a solid or even basic grasp of financial skills, I would suggest not spending the $11 on this book and save it instead.
