Many of Higgins's thrillers have told one continuing saga, involving the efforts of Gen. Charles Ferguson (head of the British PM's "Private Army") and his staff to fend off various threats to queen and country. Here the timely challenge is Arab terrorism, but wobbly focus makes this a mediocre entry in a generally first-rate series. An attempt on the American president's life leads Ferguson—who alerted the Secret Service to the threat—and his main man, legendary hit man and former IRA enforcer Sean Dillon, to Josef Belov, an associate of Vladimir Putin (who appears in a cameo) and a Russian oil billionaire who's intent on world domination and who along the way is funneling would-be jihadists from Britain into terrorist training camps in the Middle East. Instead of concentrating on the promising terrorist angle, Higgins traces Dillon and Ferguson's pursuit of Belov and his goons, a race that leads to violent shootouts in Iraq and elsewhere. Ferguson takes a bullet, and Supt. Hannah Bernstein is seriously hurt. The story climaxes in a vengeful, bloody foray by Dillon and old sidekick Billy Salter into Belov's castle stronghold in Ireland. Higgins's action has always been clipped, but here some scenes are positively rushed, and there's much that's overly familiar. Still, the author's high-speed narration and the mesmerizing hard edges of heroes and villains alike should sustain fans' perhaps grudging interest.

Can Dillon and his American counterpart Blake Johnson bring the evildoers to justice? It's a standard Higgins plot, with standard Higgins characters, and fans of the novelist's previous thrillers will soon realize they are in familiar territory. The Higgins name will still attract an audience of devotees, but younger readers new to the genre are unlikely to see what all the fuss was about. I like how Higgins books end

I read book 13 and a few others by this author before receiving my Kindle as a gift. Now I order the books in the series in order. I like how Higgins books end. They do not continue. He is very adapt in bringing the reader into knowing each characters' personalities without being boring. I love Sean Dillon, Ferguson and each protagonist he introduces. I will read every book!

Fire the Ghostwriter!

All of these customer reviews are right on point. Let me say that I'm a huge Higgins fan, especially "Solo" and of course the Ferguson/Dillon volumes. I have all of his books displayed on my bookshelf back home, and whenever I'm home for the holidays i always take out Thunder Point and reread the first act - it's brilliant.

Which is why I'm so disappointed with Dark Justice! I read it in two days and have spent just as long trying to decide if the book even had a plot. Without giving anything away to those unfortunate enough waste their money on this book, there's a teaser on the jacket cover that doesn't materialize - and with the "climax" being so short and underdeveloped i'm pretty sure i didn't miss anything. the only person who "fell" was Mr. Higgins off my pedestal.

Shame on the esteemed author. He has a devoted legion of fans, myself included, and he's now mailing it in something terrible. I've seen cheesecakes with recipes that were more interesting - the First Act Dillon barfight, the revenge-motivating Second Act injury to a key character, and the Third Act convincing of Harry Salter that Billy can go on one more mission with Dillon - one can only hope that Higgins will run out of cliched castles in which to stage his "climaxes," but i'm starting to get the sense that we've seen it all before.

Ozment (History/Harvard), a specialist in the Reformation (Three Behaim Boys, 1990, The Age of Reform, 1980), digs into the trenches with this popular history of Luther's revolution that doubles as neo-Protestant polemic. In Ozment's view, lay people and scholars alike have judged Protestantism to be ``the spiritual equivalent of a sobering cold bath'' and continue to prefer ``traditional Catholic piety and folk beliefs.'' While sympathetic to this choice, Ozment argues that Protestant virtues have been overlooked, in particular ``a heritage of spiritual freedom and equality.'' He makes his case in part through a fascinating examination of Reformation letters, diaries, and pamphlets (including some material written by teenage boys), indicating how, for many Germans, the Reformation meant nothing less than a new lease on life. More combatively, Ozment defends the much-maligned reputation of Martin Luther against modern claims of misogyny and hypocrisy, and places in historical context the Reformation's relentless war against monasticism and religious ritual. As the author admits, his spirited defense pits him against the scholarly consensus, which finds in the Reformation the seeds of Nazism. Ozment's defense of Protestantism now and then swells into fulsome praise, as when he asserts that ``Protestants are society's most spiritually defiant and venturesome citizens.'' A corrective to the intense anti-Reformationism of modern scholarship (``no other great event in Western history is more ignored by historians and the general public'') that shoots itself in the foot through excessive zeal--a charge, ironically, often hurled against the original Reformers. About the Author

Steven Ozment is a professor of history at Harvard University, a recipient of Guggenheim and NEH fellowships, and winner of the Schaff History Prize from the American Church History Society in 1981. He is the author of ten books, all in print. His Magdalena and Balthasar and Three Behaim Boys were selections of the History Book Club. His Age of Reform was an American Book Award nominee. He is coauthor of The Western Heritage, a widely used textbook.

What Did the Reformation Bring Us?

Ozment writes as a skilled Reformation historian, who in this brief work asks, researches and answers this question, what did it bring us?

When modern historians and sociologists and world religion ghurus answer it, they say very little. Ozment correctly observes that this was not the goal of the Reformers, nor did it become their heritage.

The Reformation landscape included in this panaromic sweep is its finest attribute, I believe. He inquires not only into the theological and political arenas, but also into the social and economic fields, utilizing sources which don't just align with any desired outcome.

He finds the Reformation truly lacking in any revolutionary way, but a theological fragmentation that continues to this day, with little political impact as some modern activist historians would desire. He understands well Luther's two kingdom teaching as it applies to the political scene, and fairly I think assesses Luther's minimal invasion of this turf, given that some critics think he should have been more focused on democratic freedom here.

His astute analysis of Luther's impact on women, family, marriage, children and teenagers would have cheered the good Reformer's heart, as these were dear to him and Ozment fairly assesses some contribution to their well being which came from the Reformation.

Overall this is extremely fair and well done venture, and shows the author to be very involved with the historical sources.

This is a very scholarly analysis of the effect of the Reformation. He leans towards evaluating the Reformation as a positive factor in Western Civilization; however he does not give it the support that I expected. Many in the academic community are opposed to seeing the Reformation as a positive development in Western civilization; hence, I believe the author is somewhat reluctant to oppose the community to which he belongs.

Religious Culture and Practice

When a culture does not change much over a couple hundred years, major change over twenty years is a revolution. What, how, and when did the daily lives of the Germans change because of the Reformation? Steven Ozment records the Reformation as a reaction against oppressions of penance, indulgences, the sacraments, fasting, pilgrimages, and prayer to the Saints, and Church Mass. The Catholic Church had the effect of making people feel bad, impoverish, and to be mistreated by those appointed to rule the church locally. The author does not argue this was the goal of Martin Luther though many peasants- tradesmen then and scholars today wish it was. The Reformation did bring great political, social, and economic change but not the pace or in the desired way wanted. Luther wanted a theological revolution and wait on God to bring the result of the other. Never one who sought egalitarian justice, but did seek better treatment of each other with more accurate Christian training, better Christian values, and yes more consistent Christian regulation by the Government. But Luther did not believe in arm rebellion but the persuasion of those in power. If persuasion failed, then as Christians we are to obey the Government. I am afraid I have over emphasized Luther, when the bulk of the book is more a focus on the actual economic, social and political change wrought by the reformation. The book focuses on the peasants, tradesmen, women, and marriage. The new body of Christians lifted the heavy load of supporting monks, nuns, and Rome. More resources were free to support the poor. The Lutheran church focus more teaching on honesty in trade and in labor Government change came slower and by ability to persuade government officials. Much of the book deals with evidence how individuals felt about the circumstances. A good forty pages of the book deal with Luther's thoughts of woman, sexual relations, and marriage. The author makes a clear argument this is where Luther had a strong social impact that improved the lives of children and woman. I find this part of the book the most interesting.

Has transformed my life

The science pioneered by Dr Walsh has changed my life. 15 years of chronic depression gone from taking vitamins prescribed by a doctor who was trained by this wonderful man. This is an easy to read book packed with cutting edge info on how to effectively treat even the most severe mental illness.

This is the book that will revolutionize psychiatry. Here we learn that the blood chemistry of patients can be tested to see if they have too much or too little of a particular vitamin, mineral, amino acid or an essential fatty acid or oil and that this imbalance is affecting their neurotransmitters and causing them to be schizophrenic, depressed, bipolar, anxious, ADHD, etc. If that's the problem, they can get the compensatory supplements they need to get rid of their symptoms, while the 'worried well' will depend on talk therapy to get get rid of the pain they carry in their hearts. If I could ad a sixth star to this review, I would.

One of my fave BarCharts

I have about two dozen BarCharts on various topics and this is one of my favorites. I use it for a quick refresher of major topics and concepts. I also have the micro econ one which is excellent too. But macro is more my thing rather than the theory of the firm. Even if you never read a real econ text if you just memorized this you'd probably be in pretty good shape. It's mainly useful for me today as an amateur investor needing a quick review of an economic principle relevant to my stock investing and applied economics hobby. Also every citizen needs at least a basic foundation in econ because both political parties slant the economic data and explanations in their direction so the only defense is being able to read and think critically yourself.

Order and variables.

This chart has the same issue as the micro one, which is really a non-issue. The information on it is great, but my ECON textbook went in a different order than this chart. If you want to use this as a quick reference before a test or quiz, make sure you familiarize yourself with the differences between this and your textbook and where the info is. Don't rely on it alone just in case it words things differently, as for example, certain variables used terms that were different than what we used in our text/tests.

About the Author
Paul Wellin worked for Wolfram Research from the mid 1990s through 2011 directing the Mathematica training efforts with the Wolfram Education Group. He has taught mathematics at both public schools and at the university level for over 12 years. He has given talks, workshops and seminars around the world on the integration of technical computing and education and he has served on numerous government advisory panels on these issues. He is the author of several books on Mathematica.

okay but overpriced.
By naive theorist
while this book may be of some help to a beginner wanting to learn how to use WL (the Wolfram language is the name of the programming language that the Mathematica application uses), it is not at all essential and if one does want to have a WL textbook to keep near their computer, the much less expensive paperback "An Elementary Introduction to the Wolfram Language" written by Stephen Wolfram, the designer of WL is a far better choice). what this book fails to do (the book by Wolfram also fails to do this) is explain what WL is and how it works. the fundamental programming paradigm on which WL is based, term rewriting, is not even mentioned in the text. To understand WL (as opposed to just using it), there is a 2.5 hour YouTube video tutorial and a linked downloadable 42 page note set by Gaylord (a co-author with Wellin on several Mathematica and WL books). personally, i think the most interesting about WL is its conceptual underpinning which is truly unique amongst programming languages and well worth reading about in its own right (it will also help you become a much better WL programmer and i found that writing programs in WL is both far more enjoyable and much more rapid to do than writing programs in other languages).

I found this book to be very helpful. It is not a primer. I think it is excellent for someone moving from beginner to confident user of Mathematica or someone like me who doesn't use Mathematica every day but uses it for serious purposes. For example, I found the material on using options and exceptions in developing effective procedures far more useful than the help sections of Mathematica itself.

Short and to the point; excellent; no excess verbiage; a bargain @ $7

We live in a fast paced society with little need to repeat the same ideas over and over again. While this book may appear short in pages, it is far from short in essential ideas. This booklet doesn't pretend to be a reference volume, some 500 to 1000 page tome, that one has to outline with a yellow highlighter then hunt for an answer. I loved the fact that it was short and to the point. If the investment in this books helps me avoid just one mistake, it was well worth it. In short this booklet offers lessons of many years of experience in a professional practice in a short easy to read summary. Thank you Mona Loeser.

Robert C. O'Brien

In real life, Robert C. O'Brien was Robert Leslie Conly. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, attended Williams College and graduated from the Universtiy of Rochester. While there he studied piano at Eastman School of Music, and at one time considered being a musician. Instead, he became an editor and writer for Newsweek magazine from 1941 to 1944, and for Pathfinder from 1946 to 1951. From 1951 until the time of his death in 1973 he was employed as a writer and editor by the National Geographic Magazine. He made his home in New York City before 1944 and in Washington, D.C. after that. He also had a home in Morgan County, West Virginia, after 1965, a place he loved and visited as often as he could. He was married and the father of one son and three daughters. His books include The Silver Crown, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which won the Newbery Award, and A Report From Group 17. His last book, Z is for Zachariah was nearly completed at the time of his death; the last few chapters were written from notes by this wife and one of his daughters.

Great book to use to start teaching subtext

This is an ideal book to use to introduce older elementary students to the more sophisticated notion of subtext. My 11-year-old said, "Mom, I want to read better books," like her older siblings were doing. I said, "First you have to learn to read books better." And I handed her this one. I've used this with my oldest four (we homeschool) and it really, really makes them rethink reading.

I want to say ahead of time that I completely disagree with all the other reviews I've read about why this is a great book. It is a truly fine book, but not, in my opinion, for the reasons so frequently listed. If you are looking for escapist animal adventure and fantasy, go elsewhere. If you want an intense study of supremacist thinking, this is your book.

I have my 11 year olds read the book and come back with a summary, we chat, and basically all my kids had the same reaction as most kids: good story, great read, action, adventure, brave mouse, inventive heroic rats, etc.

I then start to ask questions. "How long did it take for the rats to move Timothy's house?" 1/2 an hour. "Was it hard for them?" No. "Why was Timothy sick?" General sickliness and dampness in the old location. "Who was Timothy's father?" Jonathan, the NIMH mouse. "Friend of the rats?" Of course. "Then why didn't they take care of Jonathan's family after he died?" Silence. "Let's retrack... How did Jonathan die?" Helping the rats. "Did they make sure at least that his widow and children had a warm, secure place to live?" No. "Did they check in on her from time to time?" No. "Did they make sure she had enough to feed her children?" No. "Did they take on the education of her children knowing she was unable to?" No. "Did they ever offer anything at any time?" No. "So a friend dies helping you and though you have abundant resources and it would not be inconvenient in the least, you do absolutely nothing?" Silence. "Let's look more closely at these rats..."

And we begin to read the book together and read how they respond, how they never offer to help anyone no matter how simple it would be or how important it would be for the other animal, how they hoard their resources and their knowledge, how their 'friendships' are based on how useful or beneficial the other animal is to them, how they see nothing wrong with any of that. How cold their feelings are towards others (at one point they watch mice, being blown away, trying desperately to grip smooth metal with their tiny nails, tumbling by to their deaths, "like leaves" and only one rat helps one mouse, a favor the mouse repays over and over and over again when in fact it was very little effort or danger for the rat to help him).

We begin to talk about their morality. Much is made by the rats that they don't want to live by stealing anymore. Rats are scavengers, not thieves. When these rats are first picked up, they were living off the refuse of the market, they are not thieves. It is not until after they have been genetically altered that they actually refuse to eat garbage and break into grocery stores and begin actually stealing. They do a lot of hand-wringing about how can they live without being thieves. The same way all the other animals on the farm do it: by foraging! But that is never an option to them. No, they must create their own farming community. But how... Oh, by STEALING everything they need to do it. And not once is it even considered that they could do much good around the farmer's house by repairing his equipment or otherwise blessing this family that they are so busy stealing from. What a different book it would be if the farmer were to be overheard saying to his wife, "I thought I would have to pay $2000 to get the tractor fixed, but I went out there this morning and it turned over and ran like it was brand new. I can't explain it. More than makes up for the $200 in seed that we lost last year." But they never, not once, offer to do anything for anyone whom they are stealing from, regardless of how much they are stealing or how easy it would be to do.

Their moral compass is also shown to be in a spiral when they come across a dead old man in a forest who has left a truck full of tools that are the perfect size for rats (he repaired toys). Who does the truck belong to? The heirs, says the leader. But we don't know who they are or how to get in touch with them, say the rats. Okay, then I guess it's ours if we want it, replies the leader. And they proceed to strip the truck. I then ask my 11 year old, "If you were to come across something that belonged to someone else, not a small thing that could be seen as lost or discarded but something big (like a vehicle full of equipment!) but you had no way to get in touch with who owned it, what would you do?" "Leave it alone." "Right. Would you assume that that gave you the right to take anything you wanted?" "No!" Right...

And the kids start to think, start to notice, start to reread sections. "Mom! Like here!" and "I never noticed this, but look!" And what they eventually start to see is that nowhere in the novel does the idea of helpful, inventive, heroic rats who aid a poor little mommy mouse even exist! The summary on the back of the book is a sham. The glowing reviews are shams. These rats are supremacists.

And the older the kids get the more they begin to realize that these are fascists. Only we matter, and we matter because we are the strongest, the most intellectually superior, and therefore all of our actions are justified. We are not responsible for weaker neighbors. If they can not survive, that is no concern of ours. We guard what is ours jealously. You are only welcome if you serve a purpose, and only as long as you serve that purpose. We owe you nothing. And you must take all the risk (that was a moment of revelation to one of my kids -- the rats used the mice to take all the risk!) before we will deign to even notice you. We will create a new society, one without any weakness, one without difference, one without you, only us.

Even at the end of the book, when the rats and the brave mouse mommy (she is that!) have been through the roughest of rough times together, do they invite her to join them? Let her family know where they are going? Say they'll come back and visit? No. They are off to build their utopia.

There is only one rat who shows some compassion, some genuine sense of friendship, and even he does some incredibly cold and calculated things.

So I give this book 5 stars and I challenge anyone to reread this after reading this and not see something new, something very quiet, but very loud. Ah, subtext...

We have to read books better. It is my job as a homeschooling mom to teach my kids how to do that. This is an absolutely wonderful book for that. Thank you, Robert O'Brien.

P.S. If you really want to see the truth of it, read the sequel, Racso and the Rats of NIMH written by his daughter. She completely ignores the original undertones and just goes with the surface stuff and writes her book as though these rats were always friendly and helpful and compassionate. The rats are almost unrecognizable...

Classic Children's Lit.

This is one of my favorites (if not my favorite). Stories just don't come better than this one, and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH will be around for a long time.
The story is about Mrs. Frisby who is a mouse with four small children. One them gets sick and is unable to move even though their home is about to be plowed. Mrs. Frisby is a typical mother; she will do anything to protect her children. In this case, she appeals to the mysterious rats that live under the rose bush. There, she learns all about these mysterious rats in the most interesting and entertaining flashback in children's literature.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is one of the best books that I have ever read. I read it in a day (when I was eleven) the first time, and I have read it three times since. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH will always have a special place on my extensive bookshelf, and it should definately be read by people for years to come.

their struggle is our struggle : who knew?

One of the great delights of returning, in adulthood, to the literature that enchanted us in childhood is
the discovery of the great themes and subtexts to which we were oblivious then but which are so
obvious now. Mrs. Frisby is a perfect illustration of this phenomenon. When you are young you are
captivated by the animal adventure tale and your easy identification with the lowly mice.
But read it now and you realize the Biblical antecedents of the story, how the rats of NIMH, like Man,
are given the gift of knowledge by their creators and how this awakens in them a sense of morality.
We recall that the rats have determined to go off and live on their own, but it's all too easy to forget,
or never to notice, that the reason for their decision is that they are determined not to live by stealing.
Seeing clearly this additional component, that the rats have become moral creatures, makes their
struggle even more heroic and adds a depth to the story that makes it easy to see why this novel has
endured and struck a chord with readers, young and old, for some thirty years now. It is an altogether
deserving classic.
