About the Author
Karen Gadd has been teaching TRIZ and problem solving with engineering teams from major companies for over 13 years. Her mission is to make TRIZ learning straightforward and the TRIZ Tools easy to use. She has worked on nothing but TRIZ since discovering and learning its power to give us all the routes, to all the solutions, to all engineering problems.
In 1998 Karen started Oxford Creativity to concentrate on developing simple and practical TRIZ problem solving for the European market. Karen has taken TRIZ to major companies including Rolls-Royce, British Nuclear Group, Bentley Motors, BAE Systems, Nissan, Pilkington, Borealis and Sanofi Aventis. Oxford Creativity is now well established as one of the world's top TRIZ companies and has helped to make TRIZ well known and widely used throughout Europe and encouraged top companies to create expert TRIZ teams for innovative problem solving.
Karen studied Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, and has an MBA from London Business School. From 1995-2002 she was a Governor of Coventry University. Very easy to read!

I suggest to use this book as part of the basic package to start learning TRIZ. The cartoons make you smile, the writing style is like talking to someone, which makes it easy to read.

In depth explanation of TRIZ, but repetitive, wordy, redundant, and repetitive. Trimming would improve this book tremendously.

I recently learned about TRIZ and purchased this book to develop a better understanding of the subject. While the book is sufficiently in depth, it is a torturous read. It is wordy, repetitive, and somewhat disorganized. More space is dedicated to describing (and justifying) what the book will be explaining than in the actual explanation. The same exact ideas, often word for word, are presented over, and over, and over, and... However, the real world examples of TRIZ application are most helpful, so much so I wish there were more of them, that each one presented was carried through to conclusion, and that the process was described in even greater detail. I learn more from seeing how something is done than by reading about how it should be done. The subject matter is interesting and I would have like to have learned how to apply TRIZ in real life (my ideal outcome), but I don't feel like this book alone has prepared me to do so. One last word of warning. Many of the cartoons and diagrams are not legible reading this on Kindle.

A modern and detailed text on TRIZ for technologist and beyond

I liked TRIZ for Engineers. As a practicing engineer for 20 years, and as a student of TRIZ for five years, I have read a wide range of text on classical TRIZ and higher levels of TRIZ approaches used in inventive problem solving. The book presents real engineering problems in short form scenarios and through case studies that include detailed notes on how to use a range of TRIZ tools to generate solutions. The example problems are engineering based, but less industrial focused, so the examples have a wide application to the engineering market and technologist new to the basic TRIZ concepts.

The book offers problem solving maps and algorithms that illustrate how the TRIZ tools presented in the chapters can combine to form larger algorithms. The solution maps present through out the chapters flow through the early phases of developing a problem statement, identifying which TRIZ tools fit the problem scenario and onward to developing and applying solutions. The book also offers color figures and tables, which compliment the text as it illustrates how TRIZ is used to model systems and analyze functions. Thematic cartoons are included, as the author notes to bring some levity to the educational process. In my opinion, the cartoons present a physical contradiction as a reader, as they both add and distract from the text and the more formal diagrams and figures.

The author emphasizes that TRIZ is a set of tools, which can offer more than one solution to a problem and that all solutions have some level of merit based on the users needs. This perspective is well supported in the book's classical TRIZ modeling examples. The later chapters include examples of the Traditional TRIZ 76 Standard Solutions, Substance-Field modeling, and ARIZ, which adds clarity to modeling problems with higher-level TRIZ tools. These advanced concepts discussions are supported with case study based examples. The book offers illustrations of blank worksheets that students can use as a reference to help analyze and execute the book's algorithms while problem solving. There are also chapters describing how the TRIZ concepts can be used to analyzing trends and inventing with TRIZ beyond the basic problem solving.

The best part of the book from my perspective is the text-based descriptions of creating a functional analysis model and developing solutions through trimming and substitution of the functional models. I complement Karen Gadd on her efforts to bring TRIZ to engineers, and will recommend the book to TRIZ novices and more experienced inventive problem solvers.

My favorite book on portfolio theory

There's three basic categories of quants. Structurers, risk managers and traders. Structurers don't need this book. They should go buy Hull and be happy. Every risk manager and trader in the business needs this book. When I was first introduced to this book, I figured it was more or less only for their money management businessa manual for building Barclays Index Plus funds. That is what Grinold and Kahn do for a living, and they probably wrote the book to have something to give to dumb pupils who don't know anything. The book certainly covers some of the details and models used in money management tasks. However, this book is a lot more than that. They didn't write a book about specific investment instances that come up. They write a book which generalizes well to all fields involving information under uncertainty. They don't talk much about futures or options; this really is about equities, but if you're trading in those other markets, you still need this book.

Yes, you actually do need some calculus and linear algebra to read the book. It's written for people who understand math; it's a book on *quantitative* finance -not "seat of pants" trading. Even if you skip the mathematics (and most of the heavy stuff is kept neatly tucked away in appendices, so as not to frighten the MBAs and small children), you're likely to get something out of it: at least you'll have a vague idea of what the propeller heads in the white laboratory jackets are up to. What I find most remarkable about the book is how it rewards upon rereadings. Got a trading problem? There is probably a section in this book which relates to it. When I'm banging my head on a problem, and getting no joy from the google machine, Grinold and Kahn's book often has something which at least points me to the answer. This is a remarkable quality, as the book really was, as far as I can tell, written to help out with the kinds of tasks they face at BGI.

If you're a former physics nerd, the classic physics book it most resembles for me is the Landau & L. (amazon won't let me say the other guy's name) book on classical mechanics. The clarity and density of G&K's book very much resemble L&L. Like L&L, it can be used as a first text on this sort of thing. You may prefer to get your basics elsewhere; I liked learning mechanics from Goldstein for example, but once I knew my p's and q's, I tossed Goldstein and just read L&L when I needed professional insight. G&K is like this; theirs is the book that you'll keep around as a reference once you have a handle on the basics whether you learn the basics from them or not.

Personally, I would have liked a little more meat on non-parametric statistics, maybe some overarching Bayesian framework and some ideas on backtesting, a la bootstrap resampling, but it would probably change the tenor of the book and reduce its utility for what they do at work. Still, they'll probably read this review, and if they take requests, that's mine.

Not an easy read

This book was recommended to me as the bible of active management. I attempted reading it several times, but gave up every time. Coming from a science and engineering background, I find the exposition verbose, yet lacking a ground-up derive-from-fundamentals approach. Even in the description of CAPM, I cannot tell the assumptions from the conclusions of the theory. The book is not an easy read, but I don't think that's because the subject is inherently hard.

Update: I've found "Quantitative Equity Portfolio Management: An Active Approach to Portfolio Construction and Management" by Chincarini and Kim to be a good alternative.

Update 2: Please see Timothy Falcon Crack's response to my review. Having read his books, I really respect his opinion. He calls this book "masterpiece", and he says he ended up writing another book (Foundations for Scientific Investing) to make understanding the subject easier. You may want to check it out first.

Groundbreaking

Academic financial text books have, to a large extent, focused on beta and the so called efficient market. Active Portfolio Management was groundbreaking when it was first published in 1994 as instead it was devoted to the practical process of generating alpha from a quantative angle. Richard Grinold and Ronald Kahn, today retired and at BlackRock respectively, share a history in academia, at BARRA and above all at the quant behemoth Barclays Global Investors where they both held leading positions while writing this book.

Even though the book is full of financial theory the approach is practical. The topic at hand is the generation of risk adjusted relative returns. The market returns are always the baseline and success is measured by the IR (the ratio of residual return to residual variance) rather than an academic Sharpe ratio. When I first read this book 10 - 12 years ago I didn't by any means find it enjoyable. It's thick, theoretical, filled with formulas and I was frankly not ready for it. Yet, over the years I find myself returning to the key concepts of the book over and over again. Out of the four parts the first lays out the authors' theories and then the latter three cover the practical work of a quant PM.

The claim to fame of the book is a concept called The Fundamental Law of Active Management that reads IR=IC*√BR. It states that there are two sources of oportunities to increase the information ratio. The first is the ability to forecast asset's residual return, measured by the information coefficient. The IC is the connection between forecasts and eventual returns, IC=2*(N1/N)-1 where N1 denotes the number of correct bets and N the total number of bets made. It's a measure of skill. Active asset management is all about forecasting. Success in forecasting doesn't only hinge on doing things right but also on doing the right thing, i.e. not only on the PMs skill but on wheather the pond he is fishing in is promissing. This is where BGIs quant signals come into play but also Warren Buffett's concept of Graham and Doddsville. The second source of IR is breadth - the number of independent active oportunities per year the PM have to use his skill on. IC is about the quality of investment opportunities while BR is about the quantity of investment opportunities through coverage of more securities or a higher frequency of opportunities. It is for example more valuable to be able to forecast the returns of 1600 stocks than 1100 stocks. To increase the IR from 0,5 to 1,0 one would need to double skill, increase breadth by a factor of four or some combination of the two. This additive value of further breadth requires investment opportunities to be totally uncorrelated (this favours an eclectic investment style). If a new opportunity is fully correlated to a previous one it adds no IR. Most opportunities fall somewhere in between.

Often the asset management process focuses excessively on the quality of bets versus the quantity. The concept of breadth emphasizes the negative secondary effects that come with placing limits on an investment process with an edge. It's not only that limiting the investment universe deducts IR, the implications are broader. Limiting yourself to being long only lowers IR. Placing restrictions on the amount of cash in the portfolio lowers IR, so does demanding sector neutrality in an equity portfolio etc. In reality you only need to have a very small edge, say a 0,52 hit ratio to create a great IR if the breadth is large - so don't constrain yourself without good cause.

The opening line of the book reads "The art of investing is evolving into the science of investing." In many ways the book was a precursor to today's world of multifactor risk factor models, exotic betas etc., i.e. the systematization of all the alpha signals that can be systemized - leaving precious little pure alpha for traditional active investors. In an interview Grinold stated "The goal is to replace heroic personalities contending in an atmosphere of greed and fear with compelling hypotheses subjected to hard data." This is an important book, but I kind of like my heroes.

The riddle of creation explored by a scientist

Robert Jastrow is an astronomer and, while he covers rather deep subjects like the Big Bang and theories of expanding universes, he never talks down to his readers. The most famous excerpt from this book has to be the anecdote about scientists scaling the "mountains of ignorance" and finding, at the summit, a band of theologians who have been sitting their for centuries. It's fitting, considering that the Big Bang theory seems to echo the Genesis creation story. The book was published in the mid-1970s so it's obviously not the most current astronomical book out there, but it's still a fascinating read.

DID THEOLOGIANS AND THE BOOK OF GENESIS ARRIVE AT THE TRUTH BEFORE SCIENCE DID?

Robert Jastrow (1925-2008) was an American astronomer, physicist and cosmologist. He wrote many popular books, such as Red Giants and White Dwarfs, Until the Sun Dies, The Enchanted Loom, etc.

He wrote in the first chapter of this 1978 book, "When an astronomer writes about God, his colleagues assume he is either over the hill or going bonkers. In my case it should be understood from the start that I am an agnostic in religious matters. However, I am fascinated by some strange developments going on in astronomy---partly because of their religious implications and partly because of the peculiar reactions of my colleagues. The essence of the strange developments is that the Universe had, in some sense, a beginning... and under circumstances that seem to make it impossible ... to find out what force or forces brought the world into being at that moment." (Pg. 11-12)

He adds, "The details differ, but the essential elements in the astronomical and biblical accounts of Genesis are the same: the chain of events leading to man commenced suddenly and sharply at a definite moment in time, in a flash of light and energy. Some scientists are unhappy with the idea that the world began in this way..." (Pg. 14)

He observes, "Now three lines of evidence---the motions of the galaxies, the laws of thermodynamics, and the life story of the stars---pointed to one conclusion; all indicated that the Universe had a beginning." (Pg. 111) He adds, "In fact, some prominent scientists began to feel the same irritation over the expanding Universe that Einstein had expressed earlier... There is a strange ring of feeling and emotion in these reactions. They come from the heart, whereas you would expect that judgments to come from the brain. Why? I think part of the answer is that scientists cannot bear the thought of a natural phenomenon which cannot be explained... There is a kind of religion in science... This religious faith of the scientist is violated by the discovery that the world had a beginning..." (Pg. 113)

He concludes, "The scientist's pursuit of the past ends in the moment of creation. This is an exceedingly strange development, unexpected by all but the theologians. They have always accepted the word of the Bible: in the beginning God created heaven and earth... For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He had scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries." (Pg. 115-116)

Certainly, this book's "history" is not current (it's more than 35 years old, after all). But it is Jastrow's comments and conclusions that will attract most readers---who can easily look elsewhere for a "history of Big Bang cosmology."

Nice but disappointing

VERY DISAPPOINTED! The book is beautiful - gorgeous pictures; However, it is not as advertised. In the description, it read "80 Macarons: flavour by flavour, a trend book, inspirations and recipes for each." Reality: it includes the 4 basic shell recipes and 39 recipes for fillings. Also states "Step-by-step photographs and instructions for making the biscuits and ganache fillings at home." It has pictures of the finished product, but does not include step-by-step photographs. Beautiful book but very disappointed in the content. Description of book really needs to be revised so it is more accurate.

Good for the eyes, not so much for your skills.

This is a great book as a gift, but not so great as an instructional book for people that are serious with macaron baking purposes.
Many recipes are redundant, where you can simply switch out one flavoring or two from the first few recipes - halfway through the book I can already predict a new recipe before even reading it. What disappoints me the most is that the book did not mention their suppliers like Pierre Herme did. I am very interested as to where Laduree sourced their ingredients, because when it comes to making something as simple as a flavored ganache, the quality of each individual ingredients becomes a lot more important as these few ingredients dominate the overall taste. You can follow the recipe perfectly but never produce an authentic Laduree macaron simply because you dont know what brand of ingredients to use - not even the chocolate. Another thing that blew my mind was that the recipe calls for a certain "number" of egg whites, but not the actual mass of it, when all other ingredients were listed with actual weighings. What the hell? A professional recipe book should have listed the weighings for the most critical ingredients, in this case the egg whites in macarons. To me this is an unforgivable mistake.
Overall, the book is beautiful and is definitely worth the money. However in terms of content, I believe any other macaron recipe book can achieve, if not easily exceed, the Laduree book. So far my favorite Macaron book is still the Pierre Herme Macarons. Apologies for the grammer/typos - English is not my first language.

Beautifully Disappointing

I was so excited to receive this book today. It came in the beautiful Laduree fashion you'd expect; gorgeous box with lovely pictures inside along with a fold-out list of every Laduree macaron they've ever created. Love at first sight! Imagine my surprise as I'm poring through the book only to find quite a few of their staple favorites were not included; where's the Salted Butter Caramel, the Praline, the Coffee? Not in the book; just a small mention of them. Don't get me wrong, there's no shortage of recipes; just disappointed that some of their most famous faves were excluded. Still a lovely book to look at with plenty of recipes to try.

The greatest design mentor you could ask for, in your back pocket

The minute I started reading Org Design for Design Orgs, I couldn't tear my eyes from it. It was almost 2am when I found myself in the middle of chapter 7, and had to talk myself into getting some sleep.

This book was so rich with personable, practical advice on how build design culture that I felt like I was in a cozy fireside chat with a design mentor. It was like listening to stories from someone who has lived through it all. Someone who could relate and empathize deeply with the issues I'm facing with my design organization, and give smart, actionable advice on how to proceed forward.

I’m a designer and researcher at a startup that has been through many ups and downs in the past 2 years. Our design team has struggled with getting design recognition and getting research to be valued and integrated. We've had designers hit career ruts and stunted growth, and have had friction with aligning with leadership. This book covered all these issues in well organized manner, supported by clear diagrams and real world stories. If you work on or with an in-house design team, this book is an ABSOLUTE must-read.

This truly is the book I wish I had since the beginning of my design journey. It’s the book I would reference with, write proposals and plans with, wallow in sorrow with, get uplifted with hope with. It confronts the reality of being an in-house designer straight on. I always have it with me at work, showing highlighted sections to my design manager, to product managers and engineers.

It’s not only a book that I know will be useful throughout my career in design, it’s the greatest design mentor I could ever ask for, always in my back pocket.

"It is amazing how much information is contained in a 330 pages textbook and several topics of daily clinical interest are discussed in more detail than in other much heavier textbooks. The quality of the many illustrations is also outstanding. This is the ideal textbook for the junior neurologist who starts his EEG training, but browsing it will also be a pleasure for the experienced EEG reader. Very helpful EEG book

If you do not want to buy multiple books on EEG and want only one, then this is it. I wish that this book had been written sooner. I am a epilepsy fellow in training and have read many EEG primers and text books including the recommended classics like Hughes, Ebersole , Niedermyer, John's Hopkins atlas, etc...All these books are good but, are dry reading or too voluminous and, at times are difficult to digest at first pass.

On the other hand I really enjoyed reading the Practical Approach to Electroencephalograph by by Mark Libenson M.D. The book is filled with all the information from basic concepts to advanced EEG interpretation written in a vey nice and easy to understand format. The author makes a special effort to simplify and explain the fundamentals and concepts in interpreting the EEG. Ample illustrative examples and easy to understand analogies are provided. There are quizzes to help you better understand the construction, advantages and potential pitfalls off various montages. While reading the book I had many "aha!" moments. There are many pearls which are very helpful even for the experienced EEG reader. This is one book that grows with you as you expand your role as an EEG reader. It suits the needs of both the novice and experienced. This book is the next best thing to having an experienced and knowledgeable Epileptologist by your side. I would highly recommend it to burdened neurology residents and epilepsy fellows who want to master EEG interpretation in an easy and knowledgeable manner. EEG techs would find it helpful too. I had fun reading it and hope that you do too.

poor packaging

arrived on time. delivered while raining. box was not placed in plastic bag for protection. book was only partially wrapped in plastic. had the item remained outside for longer than a few hours it would have sustained water damage.

A TALE OF TWO TOMES--HIT & MISS.

Since the advent of practicable digital EEG instrumentation for the clinic, the Neurodiagnostic (as it now seems to prefer to style itself) training community has lacked an appropriately contemporary and comprehensive introductory text.

Such a text would arrive unburdened by messy and cumbersome detail of antiquated and problematic analog EEG instrumentation--the latter with its trouble prone and difficult to adjust electromechanical pens, messy ink, relative extreme montage inflexibility, noise and artifact proneness, and bulky, difficult to access or review paper records....

While mention of such does, of course, belong in the historical contextualization of a field, properly abbreviated mention of same makes space (both intellectual- and shelf-) for necessary elucidation of unique aspects of the newer technology; Thus, caveats with respect to, say, adjustment of "pen damping" can yield to explanation of digital sampling--its limitations (e.g., Nyquist limit) and unique virtues (e.g., filtering and montage flexibility, etc.).

Clearly, the lack of such an up-to-date text has been felt; Two major new texts have now materialized, almost simultaneously, to occupy that relative instructional vacuum and one of them is this truly wonderful and practical (!) book by Libenson (Saunders Elsevier, 2010).

Libenson ("L") is just the book for the job!

The second text is the similarly titled, "Practical Guide for Clinical Neurophysiologic Testing*EEG" by Yamada & Meng (Wolters Kluwer|Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2010). (N.B. If you're starting out in EEG, acquire and read this problematic "Practical Guide..." only AFTER you've more pleasantly toured the EEG landscape as presented in L.)

Yamada & Meng ("Y&M") seems to have been eagerly awaited by the EEG community. (See the flavor of the first review of Y&M on Amazon.) For whatever reason, though, L seems not to have had the same degree of "advance press."

In any event, since both L and Y&M purport to target similar audiences (i.e., medical students, neurology and epileptology interns or fellows, EEG technologist aspirants--and, presumably, the instructors of the latter), comparison of the two does seem meet.

Thus, while considerations of

(i) Substance

cannot be entirely divorced from

(ii) Presentation

or from

(iii) Suitability to Audience (Utility),

it is, nevertheless, probably a fair call to say that Y&M excels with respect to (i) for the display of expertise--both broad and deeply detailed--on offer there.

However, that last is not in the least to say or imply that L shows itself to be in any way less expert!

Rather, Doctor Libenson, does readers just coming to his subject the intellectually generous and "practical" (sic!) favor of restraining himself to a strong didactic focus--tailoring his approach with student/acolyte needs obviously uppermost in mind.

By such considerate self-discipline and care, then, L winds up having it all over Y&M with respect to both, (ii) Presentation and (iii) Utility for intended audience.

The earliest three reviewers of this work (here, on Amazon) all seem to resonate - as does this reviewer - to L's fine pedagogy. This is in unfortunately stark contrast to Y&M.--

Editorially, too, L is meticulous just where Y&M, despite its encyclopedic competence, is in very deep trouble (until the next revised printing, anyway?)--

L is freer of typos, mislabeled, misspelled, or misplaced figures than is usually the case for first printings--especially so for so necessarily complicated a format as an EEG text.

In L, illustrations/figures/tables/shaded review and summary boxes (this helpful adjunct almost absent from Y&M, by the way!) are logistically disposed near the text they illustrate--instead of, as in Y&M, being bunched into multi-page runs of highly size-reduced charts, without intervening text but with almost unreadably tiny captions and difficult to distinguish callouts or markers; Y&M regularly imposes upon its readers tedious, concentration-smattering to-and-fro page flipping in order to make the necessary, respective mental correspondences between illustrations and their text.

L keeps things as large as practicable, legibly (and mercifully!) few to a page, lucidly produced, well-captioned, and with consistent, clear labeling and callout conventions.

Y&M is printed on glossy paper which is a probably expensive - yet nevertheless poor - choice in that the ink on such coated paper has a slight tendency to smudge under tired fingers (and Y&M's small fonts can hardly stand further legibility compromise).

Those slick Y&M pages easily catch glare--forcing one to tilt the (fairly heavy and, if softbound, floppy) book this way and that to keep page shine from obscuring important detail in cramped, undersized illustrations.

"By contrast," L deploys those - already mentioned - attractively open page layouts, less obtrusive paper, and adopts blue ink (Y&M is strictly monochrome) for judicious visual emphasis.

L is far easier on the eyes and, thereby, the Mind.

Y&M is also rife with sloppily, incompletely, or erroneously redacted figures, illustrations, etc.

L's index is adequate (though still not great). Y&M's grossly inadequate. (The lack of a comprehensive index is a distinct handicap to the student when reviewing for an exam or for the researcher/writer looking to cite another source or view on some point!)

Last, but far from least, Dr. Libenson writes a graceful, attractive prose rendering his text far less dry than anyone has a right to expect from a serious neurodiagnostics text. What an unexpected boon that is.

L is engaged and engaging. Y&M somewhat cold and detached.

If EEG interests you at all, you will enjoy reading L. On the other hand, despite some great content, you will need to truly love all things EEG to keep on task as you struggle through the seemingly unedited linguistic, syntactic, and typographical morass that is the littered visual and semantic landscape of Y&M.

It is painful (but nevertheless accurate) to be so seemingly harsh with respect to Y&M; I do appreciate what must have been a near herculean effort - even for its highly respected and experienced authors - to compose Y&M's core substance and to winnow sheaves to find the necessary relevant EEG example tracings. Y&M IS an impressively substantial effort and it could yet become the new "bible" of the field (especially by virtue of its comprehensivity). (Such is probably not L's ambition.)

At present, however, Y&M is so beset by editorial negligence, layout gaffs, and so linguistically compromised, that it will likely fail (for far too many) of its presumed educational goals: It's a needlessly tough read of what would otherwise be some very edifying stuff.

L (Saunders-Elsevier) and Y&M (Wolters Kluwer) come to us under quality medical/technical imprints. This makes the nightmare-and-daylight differences in editorial quality between these two works even more perplexing.

In sum, then, both L and Y&M are authoritative. L's goals are more limited but also far more suited to the needs of someone just entering the field (or needing to review it). As published and as intended, L is an almost unqualified success while Y&M is a sadly unnecessary failure... a failure which should probably be lain at the doorstep of the publisher and ascribed, in greater particular, to its editors' and production staff's negligent servicing of Y&M's authors and their prospective audience.

Y&M should never have been permitted to go to press as is. (Wait for good reviews of its next printings before acquiring.)

Except for its index, L is simply a gem of lucidity and approachability; It makes one want to meet the author.
