Although the stories take place all over the world, from the Scandinavian Sea to the port of Jamaica to Colombia's Magdalena River, they all feature the mythical Maqroll and a cast of characters. Navigating the waters of the world without aim, Maqroll engages in sexual affairs, clashes with the law, and scrapes with death, leaving his trace along the way in writings on walls, navigation charts, and diaries. The narrator discovers Maqroll in these various documents; this literary setup results in intriguing plots and indelible characters. Mutis's profound skill and characterization portray Maqroll as a 20th-century pirate, a Don Quixote of our day, ultimately making this a classic. Maqroll still lives

Amazon is the only place where I could find this work compilations of Mutis. A Colombian writer who made up his own mythology centered on a sailor man named Maqroll. All his adventures take place in imaginary places that are definitely real in Central and South America. But Mutis' work is complicated to understand if Spanish is not the reader's native tongue. A must read!

Esta es una novela muy bonita y sutíl. Cualquier persona que disfrute castellano va a estar contento para leerla, porque es escrito tan bien con una lenguaje muy poetica y con ideas importantes. Puedo recomendar este libro a todos.

Navegaciones, hecatombes y eternos retornos: desvelos de un narrador curtido por soles de altamar

¿Qué decir de Álvaro Mutis? ¿Cómo definir a su eterno vagabundo, a su Apátrida Errante, el entrañable y fatalista Maqroll? El hombre de la gavia, eterno vigía de lo incierto, perseguidor de fatamorganas cuya carrera azarosa conduce siempre al fracaso y la desolación. Sin origen, sin edad. Un perfecto paria de mar y tierra, siempre con un libro de historia monárquica bajo el brazo y una navaja marinera al cinto.
Mutis escribe como solían hacerlo los cronistas de Indias: con un ojo puesto en la vida a secas y el otro en la maravilla: banalidad de lo permanente, del crudo ejercicio de sobrevivir, diestramente aquilatada con lo insólito. A lo largo de sus páginas encontramos florilegios cuya música hace pensar en vastos, laberínticos poemas en prosa. En conjunto, no son novelas de fácil lectura.
Entre las novelas dedicadas a Maqroll el Gaviero (a las que cabría sumar el excelente conjunto de poemas encontrado en "Reseñas de los Hospitales de Ultramar") encontramos: "La Nieve del Almirante", "Ilona llega con la lluvia", "Un bel morir", "La última escala del Tramp Steamer", "Amirbar", "Abdul Bashur, Soñador de Navíos" y "Tríptico de Mar y Tierra". Siete historias de crueldad y belleza casi góticas; siete golpes de puñal asestados a la espalda de uno de los personajes más enigmáticos en la historia de la literatura hispanoamericana.
